From the nation's Capitol to your bank account - rebates coming

And the money comes.

Without a sound, it’ll start arriving one week from Friday, on May 2.

The first economic stimulus rebate payments will begin to be deposited electronically in bank accounts across the land.

It’s going out by Social Security number. Those whose number ends in 00 to 20 are in the first cut.

I’d love to hear from anyone who gets a rebate. The first in South Florida. Send me a note at hjbrackey@sun-sentinel.com.

What will you do with the money?

put the rebate in savings to help pay for hurricane insurance and county taxes

I'm going to spend it in Haiti.

I'm going to pay off a bill

I will pay off a bill

I received the following on an email.
Sounds good to me. (Just Joking.)

Help America - spend your rebate wisely.

The federal government is sending each and every one of us a $600
rebate. If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China=20
. If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs. If we purchase a=20
computer it will go to India . If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras , and Guatemala . If we purchase a car it will go to=20
Japan .If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan and none of it will
help the American economy. The only way to keep that money here at home is to buy
Beer since this is the only product still produced in the US .
Thank you for your help.

First, I'd pay down debt. Then, I'd celebrate. For suggestions on ways to do that and stimulate the economy at the same time, see Jerry's note.

Due to the fact that this rebate must be paid back to the government in the 2008 tax period I will be saving mine to ensure I have it to return.

i'm buying a brand new BMW 135i...

A BMW on a $300 to $600 check? You must be a magician.
Heather, you don't have to pay it back. Congress passed a law giving everyone a credit against 2008 taxes. Then, they decided to deliver that credit early, in the form of a stimulus check. It's yours. You don't have to pay it back.

Harriet,
The only problem is that I usually owe the government $86 during tax time, so if I'm getting a credit of $600 but I won't be getting that back anyway next year won't I have to repay them that $600 plus the $86 I usually owe.

If you owe them $86 and you paid it, you should get the full rebate amount that you are due. If you didn't pay them the $86, they'll subtract that from the rebate amount. But you don't have to repay the rebate. At all
