Hey Wayne, here's what Obama has proposed
Taxes are on H. Wayne Huizenga’s mind. But he’s jumping the gun.
Huizenga, who has sold 50 percent of the Miami Dolphins, seems to be concerned about when to sell another big chunk of the team's ownership because presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.plans to raise capital gains taxes.
"He wants to double the capital gains tax, or almost double it," Huizenga said. "I'd rather give it to charity than to him."
Blunt, to be sure. But not entirely correct or comprehensive in describing the candidate’s proposal.
- Obama's plan, as his camp has revealed it, is to raise capital gains taxes from a current maximum of 15 percent to 20 percent. That's a 33 percent gain, not double.- The increase would only be on the rich, those in top income brackets, above $250,000 for families or $200,000 for individuals. This would not be an increase on ordinary investors.
- The President doesn't make tax law. Congress does. So, Obama, first, has to: Get Elected, get a tax bill that Congress agrees to and get it passed with this idea intact.
- The likelihood of that? It could happen. It's worth noting that the last time we had a major tax overhaul was when Bush was newly elected and still popular.
- When? Next year or sometime in the next four years, your guess is as good as mine.
- Wall Street is a major political donor and lobbying force. There will no doubt be a push back against this idea once the real debate begins. No president gets to propose changes in tax law without first slogging through plenty of input from those who will be taxed.

To zillionaires like Wayne the Garbageman, paying taxes is for chumps.
But they have no problem feeding at the public trough, seeking subsidies and tax credits for their private enterprises.
Disgusting.

Of course, someone dares question the God, Obama and a columnist comes to his aide. This has been the most biased election in history, according to polls taken from the American People. They believe 70-9% news stories are slanted to Obama. WHY DON'T YOU DO A STORY ON THAT?
Posted by: Robert T | October 27, 2008 5:15 PM
To Harriet, If Obama gets elected and the Congress is majority Democrat, the new tax laws will be signed within the first 100, no scratch that, the first 10 days after inauguration. And Harriet when did a politician ever keeps his promises about keeping taxes in check?
As for Rockin' Rich, paying more tax than necessary is for chumps like you, you putz. Time to step up my @$$. We will all be chumps like you, you loser. This is what the Founders risked their necks for? I don't sink so!!!

So Harriet, a 33% increase is not a big deal, hmmm? I hope you get a chance to feel a 33% tax increase on an existing investment soon.

As much as I dislike Wayne, who is an old waste managment gangster from Chicago, he and all of the other major sports owners have employed more African Americans and made the gazillionaires than any goverment handout ever will. When these guys get their tax bill, they are gonna be mighty PO'd that the abomination is now in charge. Me, I will be LMAO but only at those fools, and guys like you Rockin' Rich and Harriet Brackey.

Obama's promised increase in capital gains taxes has caused me to sell stocks I otherwise would have held on to. So have a lot of my friends and associates. Clearly a lot of the decline in the stock market is due to millions of investors doing the same thing. If Obama really loved this country he would immediately issue a statement committed to holding cap gains taxes at their current level for at least the next two years, but he won't do it because this economic panic increases his chances of beinng elected. Some patriot....he is clearly a Marxist.

harriet - I am selling stocks and planning on downsizing or selling a business, cuz I am not paying any more than I am now. let the employees and small guys take the hit - they want obama, then they can pay for him.
harriet - good luck paying more taxes in the future - I am not!!!!!

Harriet, you prove again how biased the Sun-Sentinel is. First off he said double or almost double it. Stop being so precise even though he did say "almost double".
Second, the point you made about the President not making tax law is precisely correct. It is congresses decision as well. But you've just basically proved my theory, that being, although Obama says he's willing to give a tax cut to the low and middle class he really can't do that unless his fellow congressman support him which he's well aware of. Since he knows they all aren't going to be supportive of any tax cut don't you think it's a bit deceiving that he is preaching a tax cut when he knows it's very likely it won't happen with Democrats not likely to support a tax cut?
Posted by: LCP | October 27, 2008 5:54 PM
I agree with Wayne to the point that I too am planning to sell a significant asset hopefully before year end. Mr. Obama has at one time or another considered raising the capital gains tax to as high as 28% and will not commit publicly to a specific number. In addition, it has been proven time & time again that raising capital gains reduces tax revenue and as such it is a fiscal mistake. I also agree with the note above that indicates that some level of stock selling is currently being motivated by the inevitable Obama presidency. I hop Mr. Obama changes his mind on this issue as otherwise I think he means well.

Rockin Rich and Harriet will give Wayne his due when The Peoples Republic takes over.He is giving what he saved in taxes to charity. He is paying taxes and Charley Rangel doesn't, he is giving to charity and Joe Biden doesn't and he didn't socially engineer mortgages to screw up the country and lead to a socialist takeover but these clowns must socially engineer when he can sell. The Marxists are coming.Don't let the uncaptured villains, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd know where the rest of the proceeds went.
Posted by: Stanley Steamer | October 27, 2008 6:07 PM
C'mon Harriet- get real.. You know Obama is gonna increase the capital gains tax to at least 25 % on the higher earning class... he'll do 20% for the "poor, and middle class who won't be selling anything" and will have no trouble pushing it through Congress with his buddies Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Rangel, etc. in charge. Not too hard to figure out who you are favoring in the election, is it?

You are such a dolt Harriet! I will bet my bottom dollar you have never had to meet a payroll or had to do an honest days work in your life. Please keep your socialistic views to yourself. You and the rest of this decrepit rag are no more than shills for the DIMocRATic party.

1. Wayne is not a stupid person.
2. Don't ever be so naive as to believe Obama will be happy with raising the capital gains rate by only 1/3. This is what he says to get elected. You'll hear about the REAL plan after the election. Wake up America. You're being duped.
Posted by: modie | October 27, 2008 6:42 PM
The column is misleading, Obama stated that he wants to raise the Capital Gains tax to where is was under Clinton with a 28% max. During the YouTube debate when he was challenged that every time the capital gains rate was dropped revenue increases into the treasury why he would increase the CGT he basically said to make it "fair". Obama mentioned some hedge fund manager who made hundred of millions or more. So he feels that to get the fifty people or so he feels are inadequately taxed he will hammer millions in the country. That is key; even though raising the tax will DECREASE revenue collected he would do it anyway.

What an idiot, another BHO backer in the media. Guess they all are. BHO wants to build wealth from the bottom up. Guess what, an extra $1000 isn't worth the risk of folks losing jobs due to corporation having to cut jobs due to lower profits. Also, a lot of the money handed out will go towards higher costs for goods and services. Doesn't make sense. Trickle down, not trickle up. BHO needs to learn how gravity works.

This reporter either didn't do her homework or is just blatantly ignorant. The capital gains tax has absolutely nothing to do with income levels. Capital gains is the difference between the buying price and selling price of an investment. She also doesn't seem to mind paying higher taxes in any form. I am all for paying a fair amount to support "our" government, but I will not pay an amount that will just be given to someone else no matter what that form of taxation is.

folks here it is: simple. the republicans always have their wallets on thier minds, WTF! everyone else....you know what to do. the repub's think that they deserve to pay the same amount of taxes as a person working at Mcdonald's? Why should I pay more taxes, since I make all the money? you bunch of sick, good for nothing, money hunget, greedy, ego freaks, heartless beings! I dare not use the word person? that you are not. If any person is to raise taxes, of course by default it'll be a Democrat, but we already knew this. the only difference is on who will be taxed? ****here is the kicker: isn't that like Hi-pinga to say that he doesn't want to pay any more taxes? he would rather give it to charity? go figure? stupid is as stupid does. You'd be paying your share Mr. Pinga to maybe save this country from going into another great depression? you foul! you are with out a doubt a stupid, stupid man. Hello?
$250,000 a year income is NOT THE TOP 5% of country in income!! That is a small SUCCESSFUL business owner who employs a couple of people and pays overhead. That is a doctor who employs several people and pays for their insurance and his own ridiculously high malpractice insurance. Punishing their success (I mean, increasing their taxes to give that money to the "less successful") will NOT help anything.
Obama is looking for a way to fund his socialistic ideals. Somehow, his campaign managed to demonize a persons' success. Anybody who is making $250,000 a year EARNS it! That person worked hard to get to where they are. As a medical professional, socialized medicine is HORRIBLE medicine!!! People come here from all over the world (and yes,Canada) for procedures due to their health plan being so screwed up.
The federal income tax is designed so that we all pay a percentage by brackets. As you earn more, that extra gets taxed at a higher rate. Wayne is not "wimpering". It is his money. He earned it. Now, he is at a stage in his life that all that hard work payed off. Since it is HIS MONEY, he can choose to do with it what he wants. John, you should "google" Wayne. I think even you would be impressed at the amount of money he gives to charity. Yes, he can afford it. But there are plenty of people out there that could afford to help a homeless person on the street corner (who refuses to work, by the way), but choose not to.
Furthermore, Obama claim to be lowering taxes on 95% of Americans. That is untrue. He intends to allow Bush's tax cuts (you know, the guy everyone loved until we tired of Iraq)to expire. that means EVERYONE WILL PAY HIGHER TAXES!!!!
I, for one, am sick and tired of paying taxes. And to increase my taxes while a full 80% of people on welfare are cheating the system doesn't sit well with me. Just last week, I saw a woman with a small child paying for her groceries with food stamps while her husband BOUGHT CIGARETTES AND LOTTERY TICKETS!!!! If Obama wants my vote, he could overhaul the welfare system.....
To be successful, you need to work hard. Want to get ahead in life? WORK!!!! And most importantly: you need to fight hard for it. That is truly the only way a person reaches success.
And lastly, home ownership is NOT a right in this country. Like a drivers' license; it is a privilege. That means you must earn it. So, don't go crying to the feds because "you" bought a $500,000 house when "you" and "your spouse" only earn $60,000 a year. And I don't want to hear how the bank "talked you into it". How they showed you on paper that you could afford it. Yeah, you could afford it if you didn't eat and didn't drive.

I honestly can't make out any of the anti-Obama posts! Increase, decrease, blah, blah, blah.
I doubt one single person who is against the Obama plan makes over 250K a year. And if you do, a tax increase isn't going to sink you. If you don't want to vote for the guy, just say so. Stop hiding behind lame excuses. The Republicans have been yammering about 'real America' for the last few weeks, a real American would do his civic duty and pay his share-regardless of the increase (and don't be stupid about it, be realistic).
A billionaire like Huizenga should shut his trap when speaking of HIS money publicly. Millions of real Americans are suffering financially, why doesn't Wayne send 100K to a lucky 1000 families?! It's easy to spout off that you'd rather give it to charity! Let's see you physically put it in the pockets of needy people if you don't want the government to get it!!
The rich are rich because they don't give away their money...we don't need to hear from Huizenga on his soapbox telling us how he'd rather not take the type of hit that would make any one of us instant millionaires. He pays his players without a gripe. Wayne if you showed this type of passion when fixing the Dolphins, instead of protecting your cash, we'd have won a few Super Bowls by now!!!
Posted by: Thurston Howell III | October 27, 2008 9:45 PM
I get it. Poor H. Wayne Huizenga is suddenly under "pressure" to sell his remaining share in the Miami Dolphin’s sport franchise because of fear that he may have to pay a little more in taxes.
Wait, is that panic that I hear from the man who has fed on the nipple of Florida’s taxpayers when he received countless tax breaks in the millions to purchase the Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins and Florida Panthers? Not only has he benefited from these taxpayer funded subsidies, much of the profits that he has pocketed have left Florida taxpayers on the short end.
And now, now he holds a press conference just to say he wants to sell his remaining share of the Miami Dolphins, because (gulp!) Barack Obama’s tax proposal to give a middle class tax cut to 95 percent of U.S. Citizens making less than $250,000 per year. Billionaires, like the Wayne, can afford to pay their fair share of taxes.
But wait, remember, taxes are not for Billionaires like the selfish Wayne. But Taxpayer subsidies are!
Of course, just so that we know how righteous rich Republicans are, we get their shrinking army of trolls who crawl out of their slimy pit holes to defend their self obsessed megalomaniacs. Bless their grimy little hearts of stone!

First off- I am not rich, I am self employed- and I work hard every day to attain financial security. And yes, one day i hope that my efforts pay off- and I will be well off and debt free I dont expect the government to pay me or give me freebies based on what i take home- which is not much 30k-40k per year. I work towards that goal along with my wife every day of my life. I also wish to hire some good people and expand my business. NOT ANYMORE. With that said...back to the article-
Boy the SCUM-SENTINEL sure pushes their opinion to us voters by contradicting a millionare businessman that knows what OBAMA is all about, and horay!! a bleeding heart liberal to the rescue of poor Mr. Obama
Harriet...if you were such a big award winning economist- you would be working elsewhere-not the scum-sentinel.
I hope you are happy to support the non-working individuals by sending your money directly to them. If this is the case- if you want i can mail you my address and you can share the wealth with me and show me your true colors!! But then again- as an economist you agree with OBAMA that the government knows much better ways to spend your hard earned money... I DO NOT. And a great man Whom OBAMA wants to emulate said the following:
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative
and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and
should do for themselves.

What you are attempting to quote is not Lincoln's words. Lincoln never spoke about Class Hatred. Who you are quoting is Rev. William John Henry Boetcker and it was his 10 cannots:
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
Vote for whomever you wish, but do it using the resources in front of you, not what some random person on a Blog told you. Do the Research.
Posted by: Fredrick doesn't know his Quotes | October 27, 2008 10:33 PM
I stand corrected here is where the mistake came from though:
An outspoken political conservative, Rev. Boetcker is perhaps best remembered for his authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots; originally published in 1916, it is often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln. The error apparently stems from a leaflet printed in 1942 by a conservative political organization called the Committee for Constitutional Government; the leaflet bore the title "Lincoln on Limitations" and contained some genuine Lincoln quotations on one side and the "Ten Cannots" on the other, with the attributions juxtaposed (the mistake of crediting Lincoln for having been the source of "The Ten Cannots" has been repeated many times since, most notably by Ronald Reagan in a speech he gave at the 1992 Republican convention in Houston).
However- still..those are words that ring truth to them.

Trickle down economics does not work. Look at the mess we are in now. It is about reasonable tax burdens, while entrepreneurs should not be taxes heavly, or it will slow down growth, they can pay more without it having an adverse effect. In addition there are many tax loops which the very rich take advantage of. There is a balance to be had and I believe Obama is well aware of that. McCain is more of the same and we see where that has brought us. Obama 08!!!

HEY WAYNE - GOOD RIDDANCE!! DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU IN THE A$$!!!
Thanks Wayne. You just gave me another reason to vote for Obama - to get rid of your sorry a$$ that much quicker!
You should stop whining about your precious captial gains. You bought the team from the Robbie family for $150milliion and are now flipping it for close to a billion dollars... and you don't want to pay the government a fair portion of your $850 million gain?? My bleeding heart aches for you.
Meanwhile, you had no trouble going to the Florida Legislature, with your slimey palm open, seeking a tax credit - not once, but twice, for your sports team "investments."
Your elitist, egotistical, SELFISH ways are exactly what is wrong with this country - and exactly indicative of most Republican a-holes. You are all selfish ba$tard$. All you think about is grubbing every little stinking penny you can put your hands on. Forget about the common good. Forget about the little guy. Forget about the middle class.
Your selfish ways are exactly why the middle class is shrinking. Take a look at our economy now after 8 years of "tax cuts for the rich". We ALL are suffering (maybe not Wayne - he's getting an $850 million windfall).
My family earns more than $250K a year - closer to $350K... and we are willing to pay our fair share.
There are more issues than just taxes to look at: like the makeup of the Supreme Court (where justices can sit for 30 or 40 years), and our environment, and the quality of education. STOP BEING SELFISH PIGS!!
VOTE OBAMA!!

Oh Harriet, you silly twit. I used obama's little tax calculator to see how much he claims to save me in taxes with his tax cut, and it says a great big whopping $500. Yay! That's just wonderful, considering that he plans to let the Bush tax cuts expire, which will cost me an additional $2,500 in taxes when they do.
Oh joy! Oh happiness! obama is gonna give me $500 with one hand while taking $2,500 with the other.
As for you Rob Zepp, you socialist schmuck, the economy was doing just fine until you elected all those democrats in 2006, but I'm sure you're too stupid to do the research to see exactly when our economy started having problems.
Never mind that it was the socialist policy of robbing the rich to give to the poor that caused the subprime mortgage crisis and put us where we are, let's reward those who did it to us by putting them in charge of everything.
Let him give it to charity, I don't blame him and its fits with who he is and what he does. Wayne Huizenga gives and gives when it comes to charity, and that's more than you can say for obama and biden too, both of whom gave less than 1% of his earnings to charity.
If failing to give to others is your criteria for naming someone a selfish pig, well, obama fits that description and Huizenga does not.
People like you are too stupid to vote. You don't do the research and you don't understand the issues or the impact.

I don't who is more misinformed,Harriet Brackey who wrote this overly bias and uninformative blog or the dopes that are picking on Huizenga. He probably pays more in taxes on the sale than combined annual lifetime wages of Harriet Brackey and all the people who have commented here. Let's get real, the taxes on the team sale at 15% are probably $100+ million and at 20% are closer to $150 million. That is equivilant to paying 22,000-33,000 people a wage of $100,000 each every year for 45 years. How many people do you know that make $100,000 a year, much less make it every year over their entire working life. Certainly not Harriett.
Posted by: SB | October 29, 2008 10:44 PM
SB, you are missing the point. We all know it is alot of money. Huizenga will use other taxpayer's money (Sunrise hockey arena) and then whine about having to pay himself.
Taxes pay for garbage pickup. Where did that money go? To Wayne. Taxes pay for the infrastructure around Dolphin stadium. Who benefitted? Wayne.
The level of taxation should be debated but H acts like the money is being stolen. He wants the benefits but doesn't want to pay.

No...Dave I think you are. I don't get the taxpayer money thing. The Sunrise Hockey Arena was paid for and is owned by the taxpayers. Huizenga bought the team and incurred the losses of ownership. He provided the people of South Florida an opportunity that very few cities have...a professional sport team. Asking to pay for the building is like asking him to air condition South Florida because he has money.
Posted by: SB | October 31, 2008 2:29 PM
How many businesses get to operate in a building that is built with taxpayer money?
I am pretty sure that Joe Robbie paid for the stadium that the Dolphins played in.
The biggest welfare scam going is taxpayers building arenas for pro sports teams.

This is just another example of the brown shirts falling into party lines. Defend the chairman at all costs, even if you have to lie. Only the party line matters, not the individual. Taxes are good in an economic recession, if it serves the party line. Do not called it "Hoover economics", only the party line matters, not the truth.
