UBS: Bailouts and tax evasion

A reader on the island of Palm Beach adds up the news:

-In October, UBS, the Swiss banking giant, asks for and gets a $60 billion bailout from the Swiss government.

-In December, UBS sponsors Art Basel show in Miami and puts on a dinner of stone crabs and super jumbo shrimp for 800 clients in a tent on the beach.

-Last week, UBS, in a deal struck in federal court in South Florida, agrees to pay $780 million in fines, penalties and interest to defer prosecution on charges of aiding its clients to evade US taxes. The Justice Department is trying to force UBS to disclose the names of 52,000 wealthy U.S. customers that it suspects may have evaded taxes.

Bailouts and lavish dinners? Art and tax evasion? Swiss banking and criminal investigations?

What do you think? What's your experience with UBS?

Who cares ?? What can the little people who pay their bills every month do ? Nothing !! Obuma is giving more to these banks and who is watching them ? NOBODY !! Asked the banks who raised the rates on credit cards after the last check and they started to raise their hands. Martha Stewart went to jail over 40K and look at all these theives and they are walking around and given more money.
Solution: Give it to the taxpayers and let us spend it !!! Nobody needed to babysit the money.. It will be spent, cars,tv's,houses, bills, etc. But NO this will never happen but my kids will be paying for this bill !!! GROSS and we cant do nothing about it. Obuma is doing the opposite that Reagan did.. We are in BIG TROUBLE..

Hmm let's look at their name - UBS - the bank is full of BS.

I think bail-outs and dinners are apples and oranges. No employee should be getting bonus' when you are needing bail-out money, BUT entertaining, wooing and keeping your top customers is a necessary cost of business.

Why though does it seem to me there is more outrage over Obama's mortgage plan than there was/is over the bank bail-outs? Here we could have flat out bought AIG 3 times over, they want more money now and no one seems to care.

Don't get the wrong idea, I don't want bank bail-outs or mortgage bail-outs, but if I really had to choose - bailing out the consumer and getting them to spend would make the economy recover quicker.

The real answer is to bail out the people, not businesses! Then let the people bailout good good businesses!

Letting the bad ones go down!

It will never happen due to the greed and corruption in politics!

We didn't bail UBS out. They are a Swiss bank and Switzerland gave them $60B.

This whole bail out plan is wrong...Instead of bailing out the institutions that reaped billions in profits for their predatory lending, they should all be left to fail!

Where is the help for all the people these companies "scammed" with their lending practices?

No help for them!

Who cares about the $60B bailout!

Who cares about bankruptcies?

What about those poor crabs and shrimp?

Hmmmmmm....shrimp.

Personally, I think a lot of the wall street bad news has to do with this kind of stuff. The wealthy in the US are getting scammed and unable to retrieve their losses, so they put the clamps down on investing and buying new things. Madoff, the guy in TX, and all these other folks are starting to add up. The money that was on paper is not in the vault.

WRONG. The Swiss government did not do a $60 billion bailout of UBS - First, Get your facts straight. The Swiss National Bank set up a seperate bank that UBS could put securities into to remove them from their balance sheet with half the profits going to the Swiss National Bank.
Second, the Swiss national Bank approached UBS about this transaction, UBS did not go to the Swiss Government.
Third, Do you understand what a Qualified Intermediary Agreement is? It is an agreement the IRS set up with over 6,000 foreign Banks. The QIA states that if Americans decide to do business with you, have them sign a document which states that they are required to disclose this banking arraignment and pay taxes to the US government through the IRS. According to the QIA this will satisfy the IRS. UBS has followed this arraignment which the IRS is asking UBS to break now! Now the IRS has filed civil charges and issued a John Doe Summons. A JD summons says we do not have evidence; however we want you to disclose all banking records to us and than we can look for evidence. Is that a violation of privacy? Over 50 American companies have headquarters in Switzerland with Americans employed. These individauls have accounts at UBS in Switerland and do their banking in Switzerland. So the IRS is stating to violate these individuals privacy so we can gather evidence. Would you disclose your banking account to the IRS so they can verify you never bounced a check (which is against the law). UBS has a right to turn over names only when fraud or a criminal act has occured or may occur. UBS has turned over 300 names to the DOJ. Swiss law does not allow for us to turn over just any name. So the IRS is basically reneging on the agreement they signed with UBS and than asking UBS to violate Swiss Law.
Fourth, Art Basel is a multi year sponsorship that UBS entered into 3-4 years prior and paid for 3-4 years ago. The event is for clients not executives. Take a look at the attachment.
Five, my experience with UBS has been AWESOME. They are truly the onlt wealth management firm that puts their clients first!
Last, I agree with some previous posts - No bailouts! No stimulus plans! To get banks lending again, America should take the Swiss lead and do what they created for both UBS and Credit Suisse. This trillion dollar stimulus plan as a joke, like our president and congress. They both want a Socialistic society where everyone is dependent on the government. No owning a home is not a right in America, it is a responsibility - the government does not see it that way.

Just another example of the rich doing what they want. This will all end, when it is only the rich getting to afford food, and housing, the average man or woman will have only one option.. To take what they will need. this will be the end of our free society, as sure martial law will prevail. As soon as we the people take control of what was ment to be for the people,by the people, then this waste, distrust, and sickining day to day "bailouts" will continue...READ your constitution...it was written by men far wiser than any one alive today in Washington.

This is nothing new. Governments, throughout time, have isolated themselves from those they represent, it is inevitable. Our congressmen earn over $150K each with budgets for each office upwards of $2+ million dollars each.

You can not expect that kind of a culture to foster change and hope and effective solutions. They must share in the pain or they will do nothing.

The only solution is for the REPRESENTED to vote on money spent. A National Annual Election to vote on the annual expenditures for the US.

If you take the money control away from Congress, you take care of the problem.

Additionally, before any individutal runs for office, they must post what they plan and what their solutions are, in addition to, how they intend to implement them. If they fail to complete the "checklist" they must submit for candidacy, during their FIRST term, then they are immediately barred from ever entering politics on any level, in any way, for the rest of their lives.

It has gotten way out of control and the "leadership" we have is nothing but a vacuum that seeks position, power, media, and money.

If you fail to diagnose the infection properly, no matter what you apply to the effected limbs, eventually, you will be an amputee!

Bail-outs! ARGH! The way to "bail-out" the average tax-paying American citizen is to cut our taxes by half! Let me keep the money and do with it what I see fit.

As for this company and others that have been getting government help... LET THEM FAIL! Why should I take the burden of someone else's bad choices? If we can get away with passing along debts to others why not have the Muslims build Jewish schools and temples? Why not have the NAACP throw a party for the KKK?

If this company had already paid for this party a few years back then I see no problem with it. If it was for their clients, I would agree that they were simply taking care of their "bread and butter". Now I would definitely have a problem if my tax money went to a comapny that was failing and the exec's got a bonus that was not deserved.

Let them eat shrimp!

When you have an industry such as the world banking community that operates without supervision or just token window dressing regulation, by other insiders within the industry, it's like turning the lights out on the most crime-ridden street when there's no moon. My website, http://www.americasservicingcompany.info , details what I have personally encountered and what I'm doing about it.

Realize all the insiders are still in control. In fact you just re-installed the Clinton regime and the Chicago political machine.

Perhaps the only way to end this is in the courts, and the ballot box, and that will take time, but right now the WRONG people are in control. We have been FLEECED in the biggest bank robbery of all time, and - like the reverse mortgage, this one was done by the political/banking organization, not small-time street thugs.

Educate yourself ! Then ACT.

The vice chairman of UBS is former Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX). He is John McCain's principal financial advisor (remember we're a "nation of whiners"?). His wife, Wendy Gramm, is former chairperson of the Commodity Trading Futures Commission. The CFTC is supposed to regulate trading of energy futures, but Wendy is opposed to government regulation so Enron was allowed to rape the customers of California utilities. Senator Gramm rewrote the law to exempt finanical deriviatives (credit default swaps) from CFTC, or any govermental, oversight.

Senator Gramm also rewrote banking laws (Gramm-Leach-Blialy) to allow for the merge of Citibank, Travelers Insurance and Smith Barney to create Citicorp -- now a financial black hole sucking up tens of billions of taxpayer dollars.

Last week UBS confessed to selling illegal tax avoidance schemes.

If any individual is responsible for the economic crises of the past 10 years -- it is Phil Gramm. Thank God Almighty that John McCain didn't win in Novemeber, or else Phil Gramm would be Treasury Secretary now.

Same old story.... Business, and the wealthy can most often avoid justice if they pay the system off. This time lets make all the 52,000 tax evaders pay for the bailouts.

I have personally siphoned off hundreds of thousands of dollars into UBS and have been given lavish gifts and perks. UBS is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

is there a point to this stupid article? of course not. another fake 'journalist' peddling tripe as news. does this 'man' have enough integrity to ask, should ALL parties be cancelled? Was that part of the agreement? Is that good business? No, the moron just writes a story that a company had a party. Pathetic. What should they do, have a buffet at the Red Lobster in Boynton Beach? lol

I truly wish the US government would stop protecting me from terrorist and start protecting me from my own people!!! Like morgage bankers, wall street and stupid peanut companies that try to poison me. Is that too much to ask!!!!!!

Is this really "Front page Journalism"?
Or just a firey blog post to try and stir up a bunch of nonsense controversy.
With so many "real" stories to report on, why use the front page for a bunch of frilly nonsense. I have nothing against the bloggers or the comments, its just not front page, above-the-fold news.
I hope sun-sentinel doesn't continue on this route.
But if you decide to just go for sensationalism, keep the bikin photo galleries going.... You can never have too much of those on a "news" website.

Yeh the US is most honest country in the world? "Yeh we hate you because you are free" that is why "you hate us because we have the money and keep some privacy". Read the name UBS = (U) (BS) alot and insult the whole world--just blame the Swiss and no more Art Basel this way the only culture in the corrupted Miami will be cultured yoghurt in the "Food and Wine Show". Take all your toxic crap back that sank the world and we will deduct any tax owed as well.
