Floridians feeling more confident about the economy

By Harriet Johnson Brackey
Staff Writer

Consumer confidence nationwide shot up in April, for the second consecutive month. But Floridians are still pessimistic about their personal finances, even though their outlook on the economy is improving.

Nationwide, the Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index soared to 54.9. The Associated Press reports that is far above the 42.3 figure that economists were expecting.

It is also the best reading in eight months and close to year-ago levels.

Florida’s consumer confidence dropped one point in May to 71, the University of Florida said Tuesday.

For both the short and the long-term, the Florida consumer confidence survey indicated consumers are becoming more optimistic about the prospects for the U.S. economy over the next year and the next five years.

But, their feeling about their own financial situation is still weak.

“Floridians are saying they don’t have the money now to buy, but they expect to within a year,” Chris McCarty, director of UF's Survey Research Center at the Bureau of Economic and Business Research, said in a statement.

The part of the survey that relates to personal finances fell four points in May to a reading of 40, which is just above its all-time low of 39 in December 2008.

The overall Florida consumer confidence index reached its lowest point on record in June 2008 at 59.

“While confidence is still weak by historical standards, as far as consumers are concerned, the worst is now behind us,” economist Lynn Franco at The Conference Board said.

NO!

YES YES YES - things are much better the last 2 months! Obama has started to reverse the last 8 years of economic and political depression.

The only people that believe this are the uneducated and uninformed. I am sure the government makes sure to interview these broke individuals to skew results. Excuse me while I short the maket and buy gold.

George Carlin the comedian!
In the last 2 months this man is driving this nation deeper into depression. What cave are you living in - and dont tell me its not his fault!

Florida is still in trouble, they are raising insurance rates 10%, our taxes are still way too high, FPL, ATT continue to pass on their costs to the Florida consumer. What is unemployment now in Florida, 10%? How many people are leaving this state every year? All this while Crist & his corrupt cabinet get rich while we suffer.

Florida will not come out of it's economic slump until we take the slumps out of office.

No, I do not feel any better, My husband can not find work and he is a 20 year electrician,i have a job that barely pays the bills, and that is while working 60 plus hours a week, the prices of groceries are outrageous. i am so sick of chicken and pork it isn't even funny. The economy may be better for those who never really felt it to begin with, but for those of us that live below middle class it affects us severely.I struggle everyday just like everyone else and it is not enough. i can't afford to even buy a gallon of milk. I have a car , however it is in the shop , and has been for a month(since my husband was laid off due to lack of work) and i can not even afford to get it out. i take the bus everyday for 2 hours one way and 2 hours back, to a job that only takes about 15 minutes to get to by car. Do i think the economy is better?? No and I know I am not alone.

George Carlin....I think your nuts if you think florida is better. we have a moron as a governor that is just lining his pockets more and more every day. and obama hasn't helped he paid the banks and they are the ones that caused this whole thing to begin with. They could have paid everyone in this nation $1000.00 or 5000.00. and they would have used it more wisely then the governor or president has.

Nuts? Comedian? I am really the hiring director of a large corp located in Florida. We have had a hiring freeze for the past 2 years. We are hiring slowly now. You folks are not looking at the total economic outlook. From a business perspective we are SLOWLY turning this around. From a individual perspective you are going to feel the effects for another 6 months or so.
You are correct, this governor has been another failure to Florida but from a national perspective our new administration has to take the overalll credit otherwise if you had a McCane in there you would be in a depression now as he wanted to follow the same path that got us to where we have gotton ourselves over the past 4 plus years. This problem did not occur over night, it has been building and building out of control.
My self as a realist and not a member to either party, you have to admit, if you are honest that is, that we are all on the correct path now.

No I don't feel better. My husband left about three years ago after 12 years and left me a single mother. Then he lost his job in November and I haven't received a penny from him because he can't find another job. I am scraping pennies to get by I can't receive help from the government because Supposedly I make to much to receive help. I pay for my children and I for medical insurance. I just need help with food stamps and don't qualify? Try living off of just under 2k when your rent is 1400 your car insurance is 189 gas a week is 75 electric is 280 water is 40 internet 120 ( I only have internet so I can take my college courses online, yep I work full time and go to college online to get an assciates), on top of food and household items needed a month having three daughters and a son doctors appointments, clothes, etc....I don't feel confident in our economy or the education my children receive in broward county...yea not happy or secure with th $20 I have in my bank account right now...

Feel better about what? This? NO!!!!!

Sure, there is a [VERY] small sector who is in the "feel good" minority - that is why the rich are different from you and I, my friend.

The government and the wealthy try to placate us with placebos (Bread & Circuses = 'Free' Breakfast at Denny's & American Idol) and we're supposed to feel good - about WHAT?

Not being able to pay the rent? Buy food? Gas to get to work?

Tighten our belts - where? When every day mega yachts cruise up and down our waters as I sit at the bridge running out of gas.

Puh-lese! In the immortal words of Clint Eastwood, "Don't piss in my face & tell me it's raining!"

More and more people are out of work. There are not any jobs that are worth anything. The U.S. Government is broke. How can consumer confidence be high? It is going to get worse out there, before it gets worse.

All of you complainers need to go live somewhere like Sri Lanka or Darfur. You think your lives are so miserable. You don't have a clue what misery, despair, and poverty really are. What happened to good old American ingenuity? Get off the couch and volunteer somewhere where people don't have computers and are in real trouble financially. To the poster that is upset over having to eat chicken and pork all the time why don't you just stop eating it if your so sick of it? In this country-you have CHOICES. Give to those that DO NOT.

The economy is cyclical. It was going to come back before Obama started his drunken spending spree. For all of you Obama fans taking credit. Although I was against TARP spending, the money you see taking any effect is Bushes spending, not because Obama suddenly showed upa poof, it's magic. Get off the Kool-Aid.

That is so not real. The market is also artificially pumped up by meaningless profits. In other words their are no profits. Be ready for inflation once all this fake rally ends. Be smart, don't buy into this scam.

The US economy is in the can, the dollar will no longer be the world currency. This was written in 1991, not 2009. Read your history books. This has happened before. It will happen again. I think that we have reached the bottom and are bouncing on it. A little up a little down. Look at the stock market; it is up almost 2000 points from its lowest point. The stock market usually will lead the way out of a rescission and do it about 6 months in advance of Main Street. Like I said we have reached the bottom, by the end of the summer the turn around will be first felt, by Thanksgiving we should be on the road to recovery, and by Christmas off the road of recovery.

I am a small business owner and I thought that in March and April things were beginning to get better. But May is a disaster. We lend money to the big banks and then they turn around and cut our credit. Small business owners use credit when times are difficult. Me and many other owners cannot afford to stay in business if our credit is cut off, when we really need it. We can either fire or cut our loyal workers or not pay bills. I am so disgusted with the way the banks have gone about their business after we bailed them out I am thinking about not paying back my usecured debt.

The number doesn't mean much, it is survey based.

With state-run media going full bore on "green shoots", maybe folks are fooled but real numbers like employment, home values, etc. are in the dumper. Of course I wouldn't put it past the gov't to juke the CCI number to keep up the charade awhile longer.

Each month The Conference Board surveys 5,000 U.S. households. The survey consists of five questions that ask the respondents' opinions about the following:[2]

1. Current business conditions
2. Business conditions for the next six months
3. Current employment conditions
4. Employment conditions for the next six months
5. Total family income for the next six months

Fightyourcredit.com Is doing great, people are realizing they need better credit scores.

Ah yeah, all you have to do is watch the commercials to see who is doing well and who isn't.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of public service type commercials for the Salvation Army and dirt ball "fix your credit/debt types who are only scamming the desperate, oh and the cash4gold scam.. hehe

Watch TV to get an economic barometer. Just don't listen to the liars on CNBC.

This s a joke. Everything Obama and his congress have done is detructive. How will the fed get out of this web? The consumer con index is just that a can. Real numbers are in the tank. Look for dow 2000 and falling by years end.

oh shut up all you morons. all these stories are made up. confidence is up! has ANYONE ever asked you if you were 'confident' about the ecomony? these pathetic 'experts' CAUSED the recession and are now trying to give advice on what's happening? get a life! all we know is, obama is TEN TIMES better than bush, that embarrassing clown. basically he is a HERO. things are MUCH BETTER than they were 9 months ago, what more proof do you need?

obama haters, it's so fun to watch the foaming idiocy of you and your fetid ilk.

Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

NO - so stop asking until you have real milestones in front of you to justify the question.

Unemployment is up. Gas prices are over-the-top again, FPL raised their prices and want to raise them again. Food costs are up. States are trying to reduce the education they are currently providing. California is bankrupt and threatening to release jailed thugs back into the streets. Obama is spending away my great-grandchildren's future. Obama also has also repealed contract law so that secured-bond holders no longer have the same rights to their money that his "union" supporters can get paid instead.

I was actually hopeful for a split second when I heard there might be credit card reform. Then I woke up. If Obama REALLY wanted to protect folks from CC companies he would have limited the outrageous interest rates they could charge. Instead he wants them to print their charges larger on the bills - OOOHH - i am sure that the banks are running scared on that one.

No - there is nothing changing to warrant the asking of this question now. I would rather here my child asking whether we are there yet. At least with a child they are 'trying' to be silly when asking - An adult asking this is just down-right STUPID.

If my confidence level is up, how come I feel so pessemistic? What a stupid article written by a dumbkoff!

The fleecing of America is a bi-partisan effort. Some of you will be standing in bread lines, homeless pointing fingers at obama or bush and they like that.

Carry on. Play it like they want you to. Will you be a left wing or right wing victim?

As Homer would say... doh!

I think that Val should go to Darfur and offer assistance because we know that we are ALL doing so great! we are just spoiled, right? "what a stupid statement"
And White is just as halarious as could be with the "HERO" comment. I'm just laughing too much to address that LMFAO!!!
But mostly to the George Carlin wannabee. How much do you make Mr. Carlin? My guess is that the hiring freeze that you speak of was due to you high level managers keeping your massive salaries instead of hiring more workers. Now you want to act like some type of savior of the working man, please do not insult me. A couple of new jobs doesn't make it when there are thousands more people being let go each day. I completely agree with the "don't p*ss on me and tell me it's raining" sentiment.
