In Munster today, public officials were drafting a plan to allow residents who evacuated from their homes to return to assess the flooding damage. According to Town Councilor Mike Mellon more than 2,000 homes got water inside and city officials want each house inspected for structural damage.
"We're hoping to allow residents, if there is not an immediate risk, to get personal items," he said. "If there is no structural damage, they will be allowed to return to clean up."
Water rose past 15 feet in Munster after heavy rainfall caused the Little Calumet River to crest. In some neighborhoods, houses were buried by the waters and others had feet of water in their basements. Today, the water levels were slowly starting to recede, Mellon said, but it will be weeks before everything is cleaned up.
"It's been a long couple of days," he said.
