Smoker, bar cited in Will County crackdown

A bar patron in Crest Hill has been ticketed for smoking in a public place, a violation of the Smoke-Free Illinois Act, the Will County Health Department said today. The citation is the ninth issued to an individual in Will County since the law took effect Jan. 1.

The unidentified patron was ticketed Friday during an unannounced compliance check at Papa Joe's Route 66 Sport Lounge on North Broadway Street in Crest Hill. The bar's owner was also ticketed.

The health department targeted the bar because of numerous public complaints about smoking between March and June. The county's Tobacco Control & Prevention program conducts unannounced compliance checks at various bars and restaurants based on public complaints. The Health Department has received 201 complaints at 126 Will County businesses since the start of 2008. Seven of those businesses are in Crest Hill.

The bar patron faces fines between $100 and $250 for a first offense, and is required to appear in court next month. The bar's owner faces a fine of $250, with subsequent violations bringing fines between $500 and $2,500.

Illinois is the 19th state to impose a smoking ban in bars, restaurants, casinos and most other public places.

Finally. If we believe in the rule of law, and nobody is above the law, then we need the laws enforced.

Its about time! You want to smoke do it the privacy of your own home. 2nd hand smoke kills. Why we continue to do something that kills us is beyond my understanding.Well I do know why. MONEY!!
