Grief camp to help counsel children on losing a loved one

Hospice by the Sea is offering a grief camp for children ages 5 to 15 from Wednesday, Oct. 24 to Friday, Oct. 26 to assist them in dealing with the loss of a loved one.

The camp is offered at Hospice, 1631 W. Palmetto Park Road, just east of Interstate 95.

“Many school guidance counselors recommend our program for their students," said Ken Walters of Hospice by the Sea. "Our staff of volunteers comes from a wide range of professions, and we have therapists, nurses and athletic coaches.”

The children take part in activities such as canoeing, but also keep journals and write letters to their departed loved one. “It may be a parent, grandparent or a sibling," Walters said of those attending the camp. "And the last night of the camp they put the letter in a huge bonfire.”

In addition, an afternoon session is offered for caregivers. Camp officials are in constant contact with the child’s parent or guardian during the free camp, Walters said.
