Grandview students participate in mock presidential debate

debate.jpgMcCain and Obama shake hands before the debate.
Students at Grandview Preparatory School, 336 NW Spanish River Blvd., have been engaged with this year’s election and took part in a mock debate this morning. Senior Logan Shalmi, 16, played the role of John McCain, a difficult task considering he is an avid Obama supporter.
“It was pretty difficult, but playing McCain and researching his positions only solidified my support for Obama,” he said.
The candidates spent six weeks preparing for the debate and had to become experts in key issues.
“We had to know their voting records and where they stand on pretty much everything most people would consider important,” said Shalmi.
Senior Jesse Sciacca, 17, played Obama and emerged victorious.
“I am very interested in the election and the issues and really wanted to be involved,” he said.
Sciacca is off to the Berkeley School of Music to study music management, and Shalmi is still debating schools but knows he will major in international business with a minor in political science.

MTV reality star tries to get out the vote at FAU

xnxfpgbrfTapia1105B.jpgJose Tapia from MTV’s "The Real World" was at Palm Beach Community College’s Boca Raton campus this morning trying to get students fired up about voting.
“People give all kinds of reasons for not voting including not liking a candidate or not wanting to be called for jury duty,” said Tapia.
He continued by saying nether reason is valid, particularly with such clear distinctions between candidates.
“Look at their positions on abortion, gay marriage, health care and everything else, and you are bound to like one more than the other,” he said.
Jurors are selected through driver’s licenses, so Tapia said that argument is also invalid.
“I’ve been to more than 50 schools during this Rock the Vote tour, and the students seem genuinely engaged with and excited about the issues,” he said.
The Student Government Association sponsored the event and president Talia Moesch, 23, spoke from personal experience.
“I voted four years ago but was not nearly as engaged with the whole process. This time around, I have done research and really paid close attention to the issues, and I think that is true of large portions of young adults,” she said.
Moesch said the event is extremely important considering that the second largest group of non-voters in the country are young adults between the ages of 18 and 26.xnxfpgbrfTapia1105.jpg

Supporters of both presidential candidates gathered over the weekend at the "Boca Peace Corner" at St. Andrews Boulevard and Glades Road.

Boca resident Helen O’Shea said she is leaning toward Obama, but only because she opposed the Iraq war from the onset and believes Obama’s judgment to be sounder regarding the war.

“I’m really less for any one candidate and more for peace. I just think Obama gives a better chance at diplomacy and a smaller risk of further aggression,” she said.

Coral Springs resident Mark Proctor presented the opposite side's opinion, saying McCain’s military experience is precisely what is needed. “He knows what it is all about and would not send troops into harm's way unless absolutely necessary,” Proctor said.

They couldn't get in, but area residents gather near Boca Resort for Sarah Palin's visit

rally%20crop%202.jpgrally%20crop%203.jpgLeft, Shari Wosk voices her anti-Palin sentiments.

Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was in town Monday, Oct. 6 for a fundraising event at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, and members of both parties gathered at Camino Real and Federal Highway to state their opinions on Palin, pro or con.

Shari Wosk of Fort Lauderdale traveled to Boca Raton to voice her disdain about what she believes are Palin’s animal rights shortcomings. “She used $400,000 of Alaskan taxpayer money for the aerial gunning of wolves and also a $150 reward for any hunter that brought in the forepaw of a wolf,” Wosk said.

She concluded it's bad enough that Vice President Dick Cheney is an avid hunter and she does not want anyone in the White House who is looking to destroy endangered species.

Boca Raton resident Betsy Mack, a McCain/Palin supporter, saw the issue a bit differently based on her upbringing. “My father was a rancher and a hunter, and I know what that is all about," she said. "I love dogs, cats and all animals, and hunting is not the barbaric act it is made out to be.”

Web searches of mainstream media outlets including the AP, Reuters, CNN, Fox, MSNBC and The New York Times produced no front-page stories on Palin's stance on animals and the matter surfaces only on discussion boards.

A Sept. 29 Newsweek.com article, http://www.newsweek.com/id/160695, suggests that is indeed Palin’s stance, but argues there is more to the story. A Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund ad paints Palin as a butcher, but aerial hunting of gray wolves is considered predator control in Alaska. The topic appears on scores of left- and right-leaning blogs and topic board discussion pages.

Mack said the main reason she supports the McCain/Palin ticket is because of her pro-life stance, a view not shared by Obama supporter Craig Davis.

“Some of the McCain ticket’s views seem very archaic, and I don’t see how anybody would want government legislating their body,” said Davis, who lives in Delray Beach.

There seems to be less debate on this issue as Palin is on record during a 2006 Alaskan gubernatorial debate, http://www.c-span.org/Politics/search.aspx?For=2006%20Alaska%20Gubernatorial%20Debate, in which she outlines her position in a straight-forward fashion.

Boca Raton media college professor's unique artwork on display at local library

Left, “Pierre Bonnard Pouring a Cup of Tea” is on display.

Artwork by Dr. Terryl Best Lawrence, a professor at Boca Raton's Digital Media and Arts College, combines paintings and photographs into unique colorful images.

It is interesting enough so that her exhibit “The Fusion of Image & Artist” is on display in the second floor gallery at the Delray Beach Public Library, 100 W. Atlantic Ave., through Nov. 12.

Lawrence, who lives in Boynton Beach, said her first fusion of art and photography actually was an accident.

“I was just taking a picture of a musical instrument I had painted with the actual instrument next to it - to figure something out - and it just clicked,” Lawrence said. “The combined images looked so good.”

Lawrence said her exhibit is all about learning. “I’m into learning, it is what I do,” she said. “I think it is so nourishing to bring art to both the young and the old.”

Her exhibit “will turn some heads” according to Bonnie Stelzer, community relations director for the library.

Lawrence successfully bridges the gap between art and photography by synthesizing her paintings and photographs into one single image, Steltzer said.

“She blends the two into one,” she said. “She has studied the arts, so this is her spin on all the classics.”

Lawrence's work has been displayed at universities, including FAU at its MacArthur Library. Plus she has exhibited her work at galleries in New York and Connecticut, and currently at EXOR Galleries in Boca Raton.

In addition, Lawrence’s work also has received awards from the Wunsch Art Center, the Parrish Art Museum, the Heckscher Museum, the National Association of Women Artists and Columbia University. The Columbia University graduate also has been a guest lecturer at museums and universities in New York and Florida.

Lawrence's works "are color photographs with the color related to and derived from the paintings," Steltzer said. "They are imaginative, stimulating, colorful and unusual.”
