Doctor wins AHA's Senior Achievement Award
Dr. Herbert A. Furash of Boca Raton was recently named as the winner of the American Health Association’s Senior Achievement Award. The award is given to area volunteers in recognition of commitment to community service, leadership and excellence, and Dr. Furash was nominated by the Special Olympics of Palm Beach County and Hospice by the Sea. It was the first time in nine years that the winner was nominated independently by two nonprofits, and Hospice community outreach director Sarina DiBari said Furash is a true gentleman.
“He uses a four-wheeled walker, but this in no way slows him down as he delivers meal trays, answers call bells and sits with patients to offer comfort. He is an inspiration and shows others that where there is a will, there is a way,” she said. Furash has volunteered 743 hours at Hospice since 2003 and was a captain in the U.S. Army Active Reserve and a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Ordinance Corps. The Senior Achievement Award will be presented at the ninth annual Senior Achievement Awards luncheon Nov. 11 at Benvenuto Restaurant in Boynton Beach, 1730 N. Federal Highway. The tickets cost $35, but are free for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For more information, call 561-361-9091.
