Omni Middle School wins Battle of the Bands

West Boca’s Omni Middle School and A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts tooted their own horns as winners of the finals for the Battle of the Bands Palm Beach County 2012.
A full house watched Omni vie with Boca Raton’s Don Estridge High Tech Middle School, and Dreyfoos with Park Vista High School in western Lake Worth at Spanish River Performing Arts Center in Boca Friday evening.
The bands played three tunes each for the judges, who were Michael Fagien, publisher of JAZZIZ Magazine, and Jerry Fischer, musician and music producer.
The event was sponsored by the Swing and Jazz Preservation Society. At each stage of the competition, schools received donations for their respective music programs. The total donated was $22,800.
“It was a great event the Society put on,” said Don Estridge band director Mike Fraley. “Every kid should be involved with music and the arts.”
William Castillo is the band director at Omni. Palm Beach County School Board Chairman Frank Barbieri Jr. and School Board member Karen Brill congratulated the winners. The program was in cooperation with District 14 of the Bandmaster’s Association and was open to all Palm Beach County public schools.
