Parkland recognizes buddies football program

The Parkland City Commission recently recognized the city’s Buddies Football Program that was featured as the 2009 Youth Football Team of the Year by Sports Illustrated Kids.

The Flag Football Buddies program began in 2008 with the initiative of Shannon Ferguson and the help of Colin Bradley and James Myers, both high school seniors. The program provides an opportunity for children with varying disabilities to participate in a full flag football season along their volunteer “buddy”.

There were 23 children with special needs, ranging from age 5 to 17, and 35 volunteers in the 2009 program. Visit www.parklandflag.com/Football_Buddy.htm, call program director Shannon Ferguson at 954-536-6364 or e-mail tsjt@comcast.net.
