Free tax assistance program in Springs tomorrow

United Way of Broward County is bringing its Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program, which provides free tax assistance to low-income families in the community, to Coral Springs. Last year, EITC recipients in Broward County received more than $476,000,000.

The event will be organized from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Northwest Coral Springs Family Success Center, located at 10077 NW 29th Street in Coral Springs. United Way’s Mobile Resource Center, along with volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) workers, is touring the county until April 14 to reach residents who do not have the ability or means to access accountants nor financial advisors.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC) programs provide federal tax benefits for low and moderate-income workers. The EITC benefit can be worth up to $5,751 for families who worked in 2011. Workers raising children who earned less than a household income of about $49,078 in 2011 may be eligible for the EITC. In order to claim the credits, eligible workers must file a tax return.

“It is crucial Broward County residents know what tax credits are available, how they can qualify, and where to file. These credits amount to significant funds that will filter into Broward County and improve the lives of many who are living paycheck to paycheck,” said Howard Bakalar, senior vice president and chief program officer of community impact of United Way of Broward County.

For the Mobile Resource Center schedule, contact Maria Ceballos of Hispanic Unity at 954-964-8884 ext. 257 or aceballos@hispanicunity.org. Visit www.irs.gov.

Gingrich draws huge crowd, attacks Obama

They were made to wait for more than two hours, but Newt Gingrich’s supporters who turned up in front of Wings Plus in Coral Springs seem to have liked what they heard from their man.

“I was a little undecided before I came here, but I am now going to vote for him,” Jeff Smith of Boynton Beach said. “He came out strong today. Newt has good ideas. However, I think he should also incorporate a few of Ron Paul’s ideas.”

Ken Guard of Fort Myers said Gingrich would be his first choice. “There is no perfect candidate; Jesus is not running,” he said. “ He has his baggage but he is the best we can choose from. He can reach across the aisle. Newt can talk centrist enough to win, but he is very conservative.”

Fresh from his win in the South Carolina primary, a confident Gingrich spoke like a man who expected to battle it out against Barack Obama in November. Devoting a large part of his 25-minute speech to attacking the president and his policies, Gingrich vowed to make life difficult for him in the general elections. He also challenged Obama to seven three-hour long debates and vowed to rebut “every one of his speeches every day” if the president refused.

“I believe this is the most important election in recent time,” Gingrich said, even as his wife Callista stood beside him. “Another four years of Obama will be a disaster for the country. You can’t say how radical he will be if we get reelected. To defeat Obama, you need someone who is conservative and who can stand up to him and debate. Help me win on Tuesday and we are one the way,” Gingrich said.

Mitt Romney, his closest competitor, was mentioned only once. “Governor Romney has an enormous amount of money, but we have an enormous number of people,” Gingrich said. “People power beats money power everytime.”

Gingrich drew a crowd that was considetrably bigger than the ones that attended public meetings by Rick Santorum and Herman Cain, but not everyone in the audience was a supporter. Soon after Gingrich started his speech, a woman asked him “if he worked for the people of Freddie Mac.”

“I work for the people,” Gingrich said, even as his supporters chanted his name and drowned the woman’s words. “If you go through the New York Times report in July 2008, you will see that I told Republicans to vote “no.” I was opposed to them (Freddie Mac) getting any more money.”
