Debate over animal cruelty

horse2.jpg

The town of Davie is known for its open spaces, horse trails and rural lifestyle.

So how can the same community be attacked for animal cruelty?

It's an issue that has spurred protest from activists at rodeo events throughout the country. The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds is no exception. For decades the venue has served for a number of events, many involving animals.

There are Web sites on the subject, including one at http://www.sharkonline.org/?P=0000000349.

Well, with another rodeo weekend at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds gone by, the Sun Sentinel's Michael Mayo recently wrote a column focused on just that question.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/broward/sfl-rodeo-protest-mayocol-b062609,0,5509888.column

Some say the animals involved in rodeo shows are subjected to acts of animal cruelty for sheer entertainment, while others disagree.

What's your take on the subject?

Cooper City celebrates 50th anniversary with nighttime festival

A nighttime concert and laser show helped to mark Cooper City’s 50th anniversary.

The football field at Cooper City High School was transformed into a small festival site, featuring a concert stage, a family events stage, children’s carnival attractions and a 50-foot long anniversary cake.

Dark clouds initially threatened the festivities, but as they moved away without dropping any rain, residents began to show up in larger numbers. For some, attending the city’s birthday event was something that didn’t require much thought.

“We love the community and want to support it,” said resident Sue Trilling. “Our kids love it here.”

Trilling’s husband, Rob, said he was having a good time and walked away with some swag –- a 50th anniversary coffee mug that was given away to any resident born in 1959.

At one booth, visitors could get a firsthand look at the city’s anniversary time capsule, which will be buried at the city entrance on the corner of Griffin Road and Southwest 90th Avenue. Resident Diane Sori said volunteers went through box after box of archival material stored at the Pool and Tennis Center to find items for the time capsule. Those items include a copy of the city’s incorporation papers, the minutes to the city’s first commission meeting and historical photographs tracking the city’s development.

“We picked anything that had importance to Cooper City,” Sori said.

The time capsule, which will be buried for 25 years, also had a mix of newer items, such as 2009 yearbooks from the city’s public schools and promotional anniversary T-shirts. At a nearby booth, visitors could have a look at a 10-minute video highlighting different parts of the city’s history.

The area has changed significantly from when Connie Newhart moved to Cooper City in 1965. In a time of large pastures and open spaces, Newhart recalls that Griffin Road has just recently been paved and that Stirling Road didn’t even exist yet.

“There was hardly anyone here at all,” Newhart said. “Everything was in walking distance.”

Children get hands on with helicopter, trucks at Cooper City event

At age 3, Jordan Metzner is already working the digging bucket on a backhoe like a pro.

Jordan and other children got their hands on police patrol cars, fire trucks, Army jeeps and other vehicles at Cooper City’s 10th annual “Touch-A-Truck” event. The early Saturday morning heat didn’t keep families away from the Cooper City Sports Complex, which was filled with more than 30 vehicles from various governmental agencies and private collectors.

The event is usually scheduled for the day before Father’s Day to attract families, but this year it was moved up a week because of the city’s 50th anniversary celebration.

“We try to get police, fire and a variety of local vehicles from the city,” said Recreation Director Ken Richardson.

Jordan was one of many children waiting in a long line for a chance to sit in the backhoe and work the controls to lift the bucket up and down. Jordan’s fascination with trucks is no surprise to his father, Scott Metzner. He said Jordan is frequently around trucks and likes to collect the Hess gas station Christmas trucks each year. Seeing more vehicles at “Touch-A-Truck” was nothing new for Jordan.

“We came out last year,” Metzner said. “It was his first time.”

The parking lot was filled with many vehicles from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, including patrol cruisers, a SWAT truck, a Hummer and various fire and emergency rescue trucks. On the civilian side, the event included heavy equipment like the backhoe and a large construction crane. But this year’s event also featured a new addition to the lineup: A Sheriff’s Office law enforcement/rescue helicopter that landed on the football field.

The helicopter’s landing attracted the attention of 7-year-old Josh Shields, who had come to the sports complex to play and watch his sister practice basketball.

“It’s neat,” Josh said. “I haven’t seen a helicopter in a long time.”

According to a recent Davie Broncos football and cheer press release, the council went with the preferred modular option because it's environmentally friendly, has a much larger internal space, faster construction, protection from the elements and other benefits.

Cooper City goes gold with flowers for 50th anniversary

As Cooper City approaches its 50th anniversary, there’s more gold coloring to be found around the city.

About 80 volunteers came out on a Saturday morning for the “Growing Gold” effort to plant marigolds across the city at 24 locations, including neighborhood parks, the sports complex and community center. At each site, the city provided the marigolds and mulch, while volunteers provided the manpower to plant the flowers. Each site also bears a plaque decorated with the city’s 50th anniversary logo.

“I want to beautify Cooper City and contribute,” said resident Adriene Barmann.

Barmann was one of several volunteers who showed up to plant flowers at the Cooper City Sports Complex. The sports complex now features marigolds in two spots –- on the median at the Stirling Road entrance, and near the covered picnic pavilion.

“All of our kids play in the sports complex, so we wanted to do something to help out and give back to the community,” said resident Penny Davis.

At the sports complex, adults and children helped with planting the marigolds and spreading out mulch over the soil.

“I like getting my hands dirty,” said 8-year-old Ariel Martin of Pembroke Pines.

Although Ariel lives in Pembroke Pines, her family signed up to help with the planting because she plays soccer at the sports complex.

Cooper City exercise group pays out big reward for weight-loss contest

After 22 weeks of dieting and exercising with friends, Shari Kalkstein is 18 pounds lighter and about $1,000 richer.

The winning result marks the end of the zhavtik to svelte (fat to thin in Yiddish) contest, a takeoff on the NBC reality show “The Biggest Loser.” In January, Kalkstein, a personal trainer, wanted to lose some weight gained over the holidays. After taking suggestions from friends on the social networking Web site Facebook, Kalkstein had the idea for a weekly weight-loss competition.

The rules were simple – participants would exercise and diet on their own during the week and show up Sunday mornings at Temple Beth Ahm Israel in Cooper City for their weekly weigh-ins. Kalkstein kept track of the percentage of weight change from week to week, and all participants would contribute $5 to the pot, unless they were the week’s biggest loser.

Although two participants didn’t make it through the 22 weeks, most lost weight.

“When you travel once a month, it’s hard,” Kalkstein said.

Faced with the challenge of managing eating while traveling for work, Kalkstein said she eventually started packing her own travel food, including sugar-free oatmeal and protein shakes. Kalkstein also exercised four times a week at home, in addition to attending an aerobics class three times a week.

Owen Hass got back into the habit of playing tennis three times a week, as well as cutting back on food portions and eating more chicken, fish and vegetables. The weekly weigh-ins were helpful in tracking progress.

“It’s good that you have a goal every week, so you see where you’re at from one week to another,” he said.
