The prom will raise funds for SunServe, a local nonprofit group that provides mental health services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning youth in South Florida. Davie resident Debbie Zelman, founder and president of Can’t Stomach Cancer: The Foundation of Debbie’s Dream, recently flew to New York to film a guest segment on "The Dr. Oz Show" that aired in January.
The nonprofit organization is dedicated to raising awareness, advancing funding for stomach cancer research and helping other cancer patients. Zelman spoke about the symptoms of the disease, the rising statistics, and the proper nutrition to lower a person’s chances of being diagnosed with stomach cancer. She also spoke about her own personal battle with stomach cancer.

NSU’s Health Professions Division, which includes the medical school and six other colleges, will be hosting its third annual Research Day from 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at its campus, 3301 College Ave. It’s free and open to the public.
The day will feature presentations from hundreds of students and faculty in research areas such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, public health, HIV, hypertension, dental stem cell therapies, blood thinner drugs, diabetes and more.

Renee Glick and her graduate student organization NSPIRE in Nova Southeastern University Center for Psychological Studies is mobilizing students across the campus to organize the first-ever Power Over Pain Walk in conjunction with the university’s annual CommunityFest. It's set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3301 College Ave. in Davie.
Cost is $15, $10 for NSU students, $5 for children.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Viewing stations and tents will be set up along the path for supporters to watch and sponsors to distribute water and care packages. Walkers also receive entry to NSU’s 9th Annual CommunityFest, and an official walk T-shirt.
