On The Spot: Terry Scott, of Community Reaching Youth Inc.

TERRY SCOTT
President and CEO of Community Reaching Youth Inc.
Community Reaching Youth is a countywide program that helps urban youth find structure and direction in their lives through vocational training and mentoring.
How was Community Reaching Youth set up?
"It’s a nonprofit organization. We organized our first annual C.R.Y. golf tournament for June 5 at Bonaventure Country Club in Weston. Our goal is to reach the misled, misguided and misunderstood and reeducate, recapture and reintroduce those men as productive citizens in Broward.
How do you do that?
"We help young men between the ages of 13 and 25 into vocational programs [by] bringing it to their level. We show them that they can talk how they talk and look like they look and still get an education."
Why men? Why that age group?
"There are a lot of programs that target young females because of early-age pregnancy. About the only programs that really embrace our young men and show them family and love are gangs, if you want to consider a gang."
How do you find them?
"You find them at church. You find them at home. You walk down the road and find these young men. They are young men that are in need of help and just want someone to care about them."
