Commissioner calls flyover meeting for District 2 residents
Saying that land use and zoning were going to force residents out of their houses, Vice Mayor Sylvia Poitier called her constituents together this week and asked them to become a force of unity as the long-awaited Dixie Flyover reshapes central Deerfield Beach.
Poitier spoke Monday at a special meeting called for District 2 residents, who turned out in force to hear about the Dixie Flyover project, which is already underway on Dixie Highway, north of Hillsboro Boulevard.
“Nobody is going to give you power or empower you ... A lot of us are in our parents’ homes and our names are not on the will,” she said. “You have got to get your probates straight ... This is real.”
But acting Assistant City Manager/CRA Director Keven Klopp said it’s only a matter of what residents can do now that the project is moving forward.
“It’s under construction and now it is a question of what are we going to do about it?” Klopp said. “As a property owner, you need to look at options ... and those are to change the business, sell the property or try to take advantage of additional exposure if there is any.”
The public is invited to a meeting on the future of the areas surrounding the Dixie Flyover, including the old downtown, Dixie Highway corridor and City Hall at 6 p.m. May 25 at City Commission Chambers, 150 N.E. Second Ave. For information, call 954-480-4206.
