Plan B: A New and Improved Martin Luther King Day

Deerfield Beach's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration is stll taking place Monday.

It still ends up at Westside Park, 445 SW 2nd St.

And it still begins at at10:00am.

Forget about leaving from City Hall, however. That was just an initial plan inspired by the fact that last year, leaving from Pioneer Park was precluded by construction of the Dixie Flyover. This year, as in past years, the parade will begin at Pioneer Park and head west out to Hillsboro Boulevard and then to Westside Park. There, event organizers pledge live entertainment by Valerie Tyson and her eight-piece band as well as by American R&B singer and songwriter Timmy Thomas, whose song Why Can't We Live Together? was a certified hit.

The MLK Program at 11 a.m. features District 2 Commissioner Ben Preston. Mayor Peggy Noland also will speak and, on Thursday, the city announced the keynote speaker was not Pastor Ron Harper of First Church Church of God in Christ, but Rev. Nathaniel Knowles of the Cathedral Church of God.

A Kid’s Zone offers games and face painting, as well as a bounce house throughout the day, and parking is available from Pioneer Park. A free shuttle service runs between Pioneer and Westside Parks until 4:30 p.m.
