Relay for Life lends support to local food drive

Hillsboro Beach Mayor Claire Schubert has for three years helped organize Relay for Life Deerfield Beach, Lighthouse Point and Hillsboro Beach. For Relay for Life 2014, she is is focusing on the luminaria. The paper bags inscribed with dedications that glow when candles inside are lit inside usually are anchored by sand. This year, however, Schubert is asking that cans of food be donated now to serve as anchors on Saturday April 5, and then given to Gateway Community Outreach. Flyers headlined "Together we Can!" direct donations to Federal Highway Storage, 415 S. Federal Highway. "I learned it from another Relay," she said, "which used canned goods for luminaria then donated them to a local food bank." For information, call 954-421-2210.
