Lawrence exhibit fusing art and photography on display through Nov. 12

Left, “Pierre Bonnard Pouring a Cup of Tea” by Terryl Best Lawrence.

A new art exhibit “will turn some heads” according to Bonnie Stelzer of the Delray Beach Public Library.

“The Fusion of Image & Artist” exhibit features the work of Boynton Beach artist and photographer, Terryl Best Lawrence. Her work has been displayed at universities, including FAU at its MacArthur Library. Plus she has exhibited her work at galleries in New York and Connecticut, and currently at EXOR Galleries in Boca Raton.

Lawrence’s work has received awards from the Wunsch Art Center, the Parrish Art Museum, the Heckscher Museum, the National Association of Women Artists and Columbia University. She also has been a guest lecturer at museums and universities in New York and Florida.

“Dr. Lawrence bridges the gap between art and photography by synthesizing her paintings and photographs into one single image," Stelzer said. "The resulting works are color photographs with the color related to and derived from the paintings. They are imaginative, stimulating, colorful and unusual.”

“The Fusion of Image & Artist” will be on display in the library's second floor gallery, 100 W. Atlantic Ave., through Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Banyan Creek second-graders learn more while enjoying their education

Left, Susanna Livingston's second grade class at Banyan Creek Elementary School.

At Banyan Creek Elementary School, Susanna Livingston teaches a class of gifted second-graders and has found an innovative way to motivate her students.

“First, and foremost, I prepare my students to be the world's future scientists, researchers, cancer curers by using inquiry skills,” Livingston said.

She said her class has been renamed “the Livingston Township" at Banyan Creek Elementary School. Through regularly scheduled activities, some students who previously were uninterested in science are now excited about the subject.

Donations from parents and support from area businesses have allowed Livingston to purchase a pair of durable plastic goggles for each child to protect their eyes. Plus every child has his or her own lab coat, purchased slightly larger than their current size so that it will fit them through elementary school.

The class also has participated in a recent “Read-In Celebration” held each month at the Livingston Township. In September, the read-in's theme was Dr. Seuss.

Each student brought in as many Dr. Seuss books as they had at home and could physically carry to school, along with a blanket and pillow or sleeping bag, since the day's focus was to read, relax and enjoy, Livingston said.

Kids ages 8 to 15 can register for Delray's basketball clinics

Sign-ups are under way for Delray Beach Parks and Recreation's Instructional Basketball Clinics, aimed at children ages 8 to 15 who are interested in learning the fundamentals of basketball.

Clinics are scheduled at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Oct. 30 at Pompey Park, 1101 NW 2nd St. Cost per child is $25. Both boys and girls are welcome.

City recreation officials say it's more like a camp than a clinic.
“The camp has started but we would like to see if we can get more people to come,” said David Ricks, a recreation supervisor.

The sessions emphasize developing basic skills like dribbling, ball handling, shooting, passing, catching, running, and agility. They are taught by Delray Blazers head coach Kevin Huggins.

Also offered is Biddy Ball for younger players. The national organization league is played on eight-foot basketball rims, said Huggins, who coached the Delray Blazers basketball travel team. He said that attending this camp could springboard a player onto the travel team.

“We’re always looking for more skilled players. I’m also looking for experienced players for our sixth through ninth grade teams,” Huggins said.

For information call Coach Huggins at 561-305-8571 or David Ricks at 561-243-7356 (e-mail ricks@ci.delray-beach.fl.us).

The exhibit of 148 pieces of watercolor paintings from artists around the state runs through Sunday, Nov. 16. Tonight's opening reception is free and lasts until 7:30 p.m.

Florida Watercolor Society president Teresa Kirk said there are more than 1,300 members throughout Florida. She describes the society as “a water media organization.”

Artists participating in the society's shows are encouraged to come up with their own ideas, and subject matter includes everything from a ballerina to shrimp boats in Northwest Florida for the juried shows.

Kirk said the judges want to see artists think outside the box and design, detail, and overall composition also are taken into account.

The most important part of participating in the show is getting the word out about the Florida Watercolor Society, she said. “We come to a city with the purpose to get out there and spread the word.”

Kirk will host a Florida Watercolor Society demo from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, featuring an artist showcase, demonstration, and lecture at the Cornell Museum.

Obama volunteers flood new Delray Beach campaign office

The line to get in Barack Obama’s Delray Beach campaign office stretched from the front door into the parking lot Thursday at the Office Depot Shopping Plaza, 14573 S. Military Trail.

“We don’t even open until 5 p.m. There must be 600 people here already. Maybe they're here for the free food. I hope they’re here for ' change,' ” said Bobby Gravitz, Obama's campaign spokesman in Palm Beach County.

Marilyn Sonabend of Delray Beach said she signed up this past week as a local field volunteer for Obama's staff. “I’ll give them as much time as I can … as many hours a week that don’t interfere with my social activities,” said the Hamlet Country Club resident.

Sonabend then went back to work getting information from a long line of interested volunteers.

Obama volunteers and staffers officially opened the office Thursday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. It is housed in a former shoe store at the shopping center. Workers added telephone banks, computers for data entry and volunteer sign-ups, and readied enough office space to suport campaign efforts in Palm Beach and Broward counties.

“This is the best place for Obama supporters, this is the place to get involved," Gravitz said. "An office opening is a chance to invite people, other Obama supporters in the area, to come together under one cause."

Milagro Center names a new executive director

Stephanie Scott-Johnson has been appointed as executive director of the Milagro Center.

She replaces Marlo Belkin, who spent the past four years as executive director building the Milagro Center into a haven for at-risk youth to excel in after school art and music programs. Belkin resigned to pursue opportunities outside of Florida.

Four years ago when the Milagro Center seemed doomed after losing rental space on Atlantic Avenue, Belkin came aboard and energized staffers and students alike. Today, the Milagro Center owns the building in which it hosts programs, and also owns a house next door that it currently rents out to raise money.

Scott-Johnson takes over with both administrative experience and familiarity with the center. Since February 2006 she has been the Milagro Center’s director of operations.

Before that Scott-Johnson lived and worked in Ohio, where she was dDirector of human resources for FreeStore Foodbank Inc., a major nonprofit organization in Cincinnati. She also worked for the juvenile court system in Hamilton County for 18 years.

“I have past experience with troubled and at-risk youths,” Scott Johnson said. “I’m looking forward to [the Milagro Center job]. These kids are at-risk youths, not delinquents,” Scott-Johnson said.

Police arrest registered sex offender for peeping into a house with children inside

Anthony Brown

DELRAY BEACH – Police spokesman Jeff Messer announced this morning that a registered sex offender has been arrested.

Police officers were called to a home on Southwest First Avenue at 6:14 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5. There they found Anthony Brown, a 44-year-old Delray Beach resident, carrying a flashlight acting suspiciously. He also had burglary tools in his possession.

A Delray Beach Police Department report said Brown broke down and told officers he had been masturbating outside a house, but did not intend to break into the home.

“He was arrested early yesterday morning in Delray Beach after he was observed masturbating outside the window of an occupied home. There was an adult woman and three minor children in the home while Mr. Brown was committing this act,” Messer said this morning.

According to the police report, Brown has been charged with possession of burglary tools, voyeurism, burglary of a dwelling, and exposure of sexual organs.

In addition, the mother of the three children in the house told police two of her daughters and her son were getting ready for school at the time.

Brown told police he saw one of the girls leave the house and then return, prompting him to peek into the windows.

Delray author has 'tunnel' vision about his novel's sequel

DELRAY BEACH – His creativity has helped Maurice Shalmi survive the Great Depression, thrive after dropping out of high school at 16 to support his family, become a successful interior designer, and facilitate the vision of future biological warfare.

Shalmi, 77, a resident of Delray Beach for the past 11 years, recently began working on a sequel to his first book, “Tunnels: An Evil Conspiracy Confronts the World,” published in 2001. But before the sequel is published, Shalmi said he hopes more readers become interested in his first book.

“Our world today is under biological terror, never before known to man,” Shalmi said. “ ‘Tunnels’ will give the reader a true sense of what could happen to the free world and its people when a vicious group of conspirators unleashes their terror.”

Shalmi said he wrote 500 pages by hand on vicious leaders, mountains, caves, biological weapons, killing, unlimited financial resources for worldwide blackmail, and conspirators with no heart or soul.

After paying a line editor $2,000, Shalmi had a fiction story complete with exotic locales, a man filled with evil after witnessing a bloody Slovenian revolution, and six destructive tyrants.

He said he wants readers to open their minds to his novel that he said one day could become a major motion picture.

“I hope with Sept. 11 approaching that people will read this book. Anyone with any imagination could turn this into an appealing script,” he said.

“Tunnels: An Evil Conspiracy Confronts the World” is available at www.xlibris.com or www.amazon.com.
