Peanut Cheerleading class scheduled for the youngest set

Left, Skye Kaden, 3, is ready to attend the Peanut Cheerleading Camp at Veterans Park starting Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Shake your pom poms! Peanut Cheerleading is offering classes on Wednesdays for four different age groups as part of its partnership with the city and with Boynton Beach.

A nine-week fall session for 3- to 5-year-olds is scheduled at Veterans Park, 802 NE First St., from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 1 to Nov. 26. The class costs $105 for residents, $120 for nonresidents. Registration forms are available at Veterans Park.

In Boynton Beach, three classes are scheduled Wednesdays at the Civic Center, 128 E. Ocean Ave. In Boynton Beach a class for 3- and 4-year-olds is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m.; a “small fry” class for 5- and 6-year-olds from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; and a “cheer divas” class for 7- to 9-year-olds from 5:45 - 7:15 p.m. Registration forms for Boynton Beach are available at the Intracoastal Park and Clubhouse, 2240 N. Federal Highway in Boynton Beach.

Each class will perform a cheerleading show at the end of the nine weeks, and the “cheer divas” class will perform in a mock tryout that the instructor said will get them ready for future tryouts.

The instructor says she has 18 years of experience, and that learning cheerleading will encourage a positive attitude that young cheerleaders can carry for a lifetime. Participants will also learn teamwork, building self-esteem, coordination, importance of stretching, and improve flexibility.

Melissa Backus, a recreation supervisor for Delray Beach, said another session could possibly be scheduled.

“There may be another session. We’re waiting to see.… We expect Peanut Cheerleading to be well attended and if so we’ll definitely have another session,” Backus said.
