Kids ages 8 to 15 can register for Delray's basketball clinics
Sign-ups are under way for Delray Beach Parks and Recreation's Instructional Basketball Clinics, aimed at children ages 8 to 15 who are interested in learning the fundamentals of basketball.
Clinics are scheduled at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Oct. 30 at Pompey Park, 1101 NW 2nd St. Cost per child is $25. Both boys and girls are welcome.
City recreation officials say it's more like a camp than a clinic.
“The camp has started but we would like to see if we can get more people to come,” said David Ricks, a recreation supervisor.
The sessions emphasize developing basic skills like dribbling, ball handling, shooting, passing, catching, running, and agility. They are taught by Delray Blazers head coach Kevin Huggins.
Also offered is Biddy Ball for younger players. The national organization league is played on eight-foot basketball rims, said Huggins, who coached the Delray Blazers basketball travel team. He said that attending this camp could springboard a player onto the travel team.
“We’re always looking for more skilled players. I’m also looking for experienced players for our sixth through ninth grade teams,” Huggins said.
For information call Coach Huggins at 561-305-8571 or David Ricks at 561-243-7356 (e-mail ricks@ci.delray-beach.fl.us).
