Historical Society readies archives for move to new location
Delray Beach Historical Society archivist Dottie Patterson remembers vividly the day she opened at the Cornell Museum, 51 N. Swinton Ave.
“It was January 1991; we’ve made great use of this room for the past 17 years,” she said.
Since Aug. 30, Patterson has been packing boxes filled with historical documents and photos, dating back to the city of Delray Beach’s inception in 1895.
The Delray Beach Historical Society Archives Room will move to 111 N. Swinton Ave. It plans to open on Nov. 15.
Merritt Transfer & Storage, a third generation Delray Beach moving company located at 190 SE Second Ave., helped the Delray Beach Historical Society with the move.
“They’ve moved historical archive sites in the past… They gave us a nice price break on the move,” Patterson said.
“At the new site we’ll have a permanent exhibit, picture rail and large portable classroom in the little 1926 bungalow just west of the new archives room, curator office, conference room and a Native Florida Everglades Exhibit,” Patterson said.
“We also have a work room for residents, and the archives storage room will withstand category five hurricanes.”
