Eagle Scout dedication this Friday at Old School Square Park

The bronze statue of a Delray Beach Eagle Scout now overlooks the southeast portion of Old School Square Park and borders dedication stones to the hundreds of residents who achieved the distinction over the past century.

Last year Delray Beach resident and Eagle Scout Shelly Weil came up with the idea to put a 6-foot bronze statue of an Eagle Scout in Mike Machek Boy Scout Park. He also planned a trail made up of bricks engraved with the names of Eagle Scouts.

Fast forward to Friday and the venue has been changed but the mission remains the same. At 7:30 p.m. Weil will unveil the statue at Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave. along with about 250 pavers dedicated to Delray Beach Eagle Scouts.

“We have a list of about 350 Eagle Scouts already. There’s more but that’s what we have listed since beginning this search,” Weil said.

Since 2011 Weil has been looking for Eagle Scouts. He's seeking individuals nationwide who achieved scouting's highest honor while living in Delray Beach and also Eagle Scouts now residing in the city who received the distinction elsewhere.

Weil is working with Old School Square and city officials to install the statue and courtyard with pavers honoring the Eagle Scouts.
