Police department receives motor trailer from Delray Citizens for Delray Police

The trailer will be used to move motorcycles to and from events, special community presentations, and as a mobile unit and part of the department’s Traffic Homicide and Motor Unit.

“Even though it’s a tough economic time we feel that this is equipment that’s necessary,” said Delray Citizens for Delray Police president Perry Don Francisco.

Sandoway House Nature Center beach walk set for this weekend

A zoologist is having a beach walk benefiting the Sandoway House Nature Center, 142 S. Ocean Blvd., at 9 a.m. Saturday.

“Sandoway House’s Beach Walk, Beach Talk” will be put on by Dr. Angela Witmer, an expert in beach ecosystems and examining disturbances from hurricanes to humans.

Cost of the all-ages walk is $5, which includes entrance into the Sandoway House Nature Center in a historic 1936 beachfront

home in East Delray Beach.

“The idea of the walk is to introduce the public to the biological beach ecosystem. Enjoying a day at the beach is one way to appreciate this valuable ecosystem. Understanding the fragile balance of sand, plants and animals can foster a deeper appreciation for the coastline,” Witmer said. “We will also spend some time examining the debris that has been washed ashore identifying the common species and discussing their natural history.”

According to Patrick Morehouse, director of the Sandoway House Nature Center, this event is an interactive, educational and fun seasonal program for the entire family. Both Morehouse and Witmer said the one-hour guided walk of the beach will take place across the street from the center.

They said those in attendance will discover the major players on the beach, investigate plants on the dunes, animals found on the beach and in the water.

“There are many plants we will examine noting how and why they live on beaches, and their importance in dune stabilization. Some of these plants include: sea oats, inkberry and morning glories. As we walk across the beach face we may observe shy ghost crabs scurrying across the sand,” Witmer said. “We will also get our feet wet in the wave swash, finding small invertebrates and shells that have been brought in with the tide.

Picking through seaweed can provide an exciting opportunity to see specialized animals such as sargassum crabs, shrimps and nudibranchs.”

Call 561-274-7263 or visit SandowayHouse.org.

Larry King makes early morning stop in Delray Beach to tout coffee

"Just like Martin Luther King I had a dream and it was that someday somehow I would be standing in a strip mall in Delray Beach, Florida, speaking to you about coffee," King joked.

"I spoke to Putin on the phone and he wanted to meet but I told him no I'm going to be in Delray Beach. Obama called and I said no thank you I'm going to be in Delray Beach. Newt Gingrich called and I said thank God I'm in Delray Beach."

With all joking aside, King took time with everyone who attended to tell them why the The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. has the best coffee.

The line at 8:30 a.m. was out the door.

"I've been drinking coffee since I was 17 years old, so I've had a few cups. The reason why the coffee is so good is because New York City has some of the best water in the world and the water is transported in copper pipes. Copper doesn't rust," King said.

Panera Bread, 1701 S. Federal Highway, will be the site of a foodie fundraiser from Jan. 31 through Feb. 7 titled the “SOUPer Bowl” put on by Pap Corps, the largest volunteer organization in the nation.

Covelli Enterprises and Panera Bread will donate a percentage of soup bowl sales from 25 stores in Broward and Palm Beach counties to the cause.

Officials said some of the money raised in the past made its way into the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. In the past 10 years those officials said the Pap Corps donated $29 million to that program.

FPL makes infrastructure improvements

Florida Power & Light Co. recently completed a structural improvement initiative in East Delray Beach that

inspected 730 utility poles, cleared vegetation from 140 miles of power lines and used advanced infrared technology to examine six main power lines in and near the city, said FPL spokesman Bryan Garner.

“We make a year round effort in infrastructure improvements. This a focus for us and part of doing business,” he said.

The improvements came at no cost to the city, and Garner said that FPL also strengthened the electrical

infrastructure serving Delray Beach, which could play a major factor with power grids during storm season.

“We implemented local reliability and made storm preparedness improvements,” he said.

FPL officials said their customers can visit FPL.com/maps and enter a street address to see the detailed map of improvements in each neighborhood.

“This online tool reveals FPL’s system improvements and investments including pole inspections, line clearing, power line strengthening and power line inspections, this is at the level of the individual power lines serving neighborhoods within Delray Beach from 2006 to 2011 and infrastructure investments and action plan following the 2004 and 2005

hurricane seasons that saw seven storms in a 15-month period,” Garner said.

“FPL responded to the state’s call to maintain a high level of storm preparation.”

MD Prevent in Delray Beach offeering free Medicare consultations for obese patients

Last month Medicare announced that it will cover screenings and consultations for obese patients.

According to Dr. Steven Charlap, MD Prevent in Delray Beach is offering 100 percent covered screening and patient consultations through its new medication-free weight loss program.

“We are excited that the government is finally realizing that preventing chronic diseases associated with obesity is much less expensive than having to treat diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and other maladies common in grossly overweight patients,” said Dr. Charlap.

”The science is compelling. The program is an enhanced version of a successful weight management program instituted by the Veterans Health Administration for all veterans more than five years ago.”

Dr. Charlap said MD Prevent has a new L.E.A.N. (lifestyle education and nutrition) weight loss program.

He also said MD Prevent, 5130 Linton Blvd., H-1 in Delray Beach, has a team that includes nutritionists and registered dietitians, nurse practitioners, health psychologists, exercise physiologists, physicians, yoga instructors and health educators.

Dr. Charlap is a physician who previously founded a national healthcare company that treated more than 5 million seniors over two decades. MD Prevent is his new company.

“Getting healthier and leaner will mean increased vitality and a new lease on life,” Dr. Charlap said.

Alliance meeting kicks off with a bang

The Alliance of Delray Residential Associations Inc. kicked off 2012 with its first monthly meeting of the year in which members

were informed of voting changes by the supervisor of elections, briefed by a state attorney representative about an unknown white

powder at their offices and greeted by six state representatives and state senators heading off to session.

Dave Aronberg, special counsel for State Attorney General Pam Bondi, said, “We’re turning the corner on the fight against prescription drug abuse.”

District 86 State Rep. Lori Berman told residents that until mid-March, redistricting and the budget are the two biggest issues.

“The other issue is gambling and resort casinos,” she said.

State Rep. Irv Slosberg (D-Boca Raton) said he’s fighting for voters in Tallahassee.

“We need to generate revenue. We want to sell advertising on school buses that could bring up to $50 million to $100 million in a year. I’m also looking at advertising on rails and trails throughout Florida; naming rights could bring in $100 million. I’m on one of the Justice Appropriations Committees; they give us a red pen and say, ‘cut, cut, cut.’ We need to improve revenue without cutting taxes,” he said.

The next Alliance of Delray Residential Associations Inc. meeting is 9:30 a.m. Feb. 4 at the South County Civic Center, 16700 Jog Road, in Delray Beach.

Fire Rescue releases cold weather safety tips for Delray Beach residents

The Delray Beach Fire Rescue Department is urging residents to stay safe and avoid the threat of fire in the event of a cold spell.

Capt. Curtis Jepsen of Delray Beach Fire Rescue, issued a news release recently in which he reminded residents that every year, fires, injuries and even deaths are caused by space heaters, improperly maintained heating systems and unsafe burning.

The department has issued a list of cold-weather safety tips that could prevent potential problems. It includes the following tips:

Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from household combustibles.

Do not use heaters in damp places, such as bathrooms.

Inspect the cords of space heaters and do not use them if the cord is frayed or damaged.

Ensure that your home heating system is properly serviced annually by certified technicians.

If natural gas is used in your house, ensure that you have a functioning carbon monoxide detector.

Never use a grill or fire pit inside your house. These will produce deadly carbon monoxide, which is colorless and odorless.

Jepsen can be reached at 561-243-7456 or by email at jepsen@mydelraybeach.com.

PGA Superstore opens in Delray Beach

At the new PGA Superstore, the focus is on using technology to help golfers achieve low scores on the links.

At the center of a new 50,000-square-foot storefront featuring the latest in golf and tennis gear is a putting green with the hottest golf trend, belly putters. Bordering the green are a dozen golf simulators, which help golfers select new clubs and take lessons from one of three PGA professionals on staff. The PGA Superstore employs 48 people during high season. Driving range golf ball buckets replace shopping baskets, and there’s even a hitting lane for tennis enthusiasts.

Doreen LaPierre is the tournament and event marketing manager for the PGA Superstore. She said only other Florida store in the 12-store chain is in Naples.

LaPierre said that when the company began scouting locations for a store on Florida’s southeast coast, Delray Beach topped the list. She said customers who visit the store, which is located at 1040 Linton Blvd., will find a wide array of merchandise and the latest in interactive technology.

“TaylorMade has their own golf demo simulator,” LaPierre said. “We have several golf demo simulators where players can try out any club, and modules that allow membership customers play practice sessions of golf indoors or get a quick or extensive lesson.”

Steven Solomon, a 77-year-old golfer from Boynton Beach, came to the PGA Superstore to compare his current driver with the latest clubs on the market.

“I’m looking for technology that will give me more distance on my drive,” he said.

Boca Raton resident Marvin Lubeck came to the performance practice facility to schedule a golf lesson and get a dozen demo swings with a new club.

A practice membership allows unlimited 30-minute practice sessions, as well as free labor on club re-grips, up to 14 clubs. The practice sessions feature video screens displaying swings, ball-flight trajectory and ball-striking speed.

“We do a lot of fittings,” LaPierre said. “We have a reward system so that when you get to 300 points, we send out a rewards gift card. All of our data is via email.”

The PGA Superstore also has a clubhouse on-site in which it hosts events and parties for companies. In addition, the facility serves as headquarters for golf tournament planning and features children’s and ladies’ apparel and merchandise.

For more information, call the PGA Superstore at 561-214-7000.
