Turtle lighting ordinance discussed in Hollywood

Hollywood recently held a meeting to discuss a proposed turtle lighting ordinance.

Lou Fisher, a natural resource specialist with the county's Natural Resources Planning and Management Division, explained the effects of light pollution on turtles and their nesting activities.

The city is exploring solutions to this problem, including proposals that will ask residents and businesses to implement alternate lighting fixtures and bulbs.

Lighting pollution, climate change and its effect on the environment have been addressed in several ways. Last year, more than 50 million people around the world switched off their lights for Earth Hour. Click below to see a quick video on last year's Earth Day and restricting light usage.

To find out more on what the city's proposals are and how they will affect you, pick up Sunday's (Dec. 7) edition of Community News inside the Sun Sentinel.

Special girl at Pembroke Park school

Class1.JPG

Recently, I had the honor of meeting a group of fourth-graders at Lake Forest Elementary in Pembroke Park.

One of the students there is Ashlley Moreno, a young girl with cerebral palsy (she's the young lady in yellow in the above photo).

By all accounts, she has transformed this class and the school. Ms. Paschal, their teacher, was so proud of her students and how they have risen to the occasion, that she asked us to write a story.

So we did.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to include all of her classmates in the story but here are their names:

Tychania Bailey, Augustin Calgagno, Jordan Chandler, Kenzae Horenstein, Kyle King, Dystini Marshall, Omari McCoy, Ashlley Moreno, Rachelle Newkirk, Collins Oleh, Sir Aaron Padilla, Ariyanna Pierre, Tiffany Pierre, Ismael Pimentel, Vanessa Ramdeo, Duane Rawlins, Malik Reckley, Elizabeth Rodriquez, De'Andre Smith, Javonna Taylor, Erika Torres, Hennessy Torres and Kareen Turnquest.

Their parents should be proud!

To find out more about Ashlley and her classmates, make sure to pick up Sunday's (Nov. 23) edition of Community News inside the Sun Sentinel.
