Turtle lighting ordinance discussed in Hollywood

Hollywood recently held a meeting to discuss a proposed turtle lighting ordinance.

Lou Fisher, a natural resource specialist with the county's Natural Resources Planning and Management Division, explained the effects of light pollution on turtles and their nesting activities.

The city is exploring solutions to this problem, including proposals that will ask residents and businesses to implement alternate lighting fixtures and bulbs.

Lighting pollution, climate change and its effect on the environment have been addressed in several ways. Last year, more than 50 million people around the world switched off their lights for Earth Hour. Click below to see a quick video on last year's Earth Day and restricting light usage.

To find out more on what the city's proposals are and how they will affect you, pick up Sunday's (Dec. 7) edition of Community News inside the Sun Sentinel.
