Free concert for Valentine's Day in Hollywood

A free concert will be held at the main stage at the ArtsPark at Young Circle in honor of Valentine's Day.

The event, part of the city's Symphony Series, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 7 at 1 Young Circle.

Bring your sweetheart to renew your vows in a special ceremony with a reception following.

McArthur students make waves at Hollywood wastewater treatment plant

Today, the Hollywood wastewater treatment plant hosted 18 students from McArthur High School as part of the Florida Graduates Program.

The students were given a behind-the-scenes look into the daily operations of the facility. They were also given the opportunity to work with several of the professionals there to gain an insight into what their jobs entail.

Commissioner Richard Blattner, who helped to spearhead the visit, was on hand to welcome the students.

Wine tasting in Hollywood

Chance to plant sea oats in Hollywood

Interested in restoring beaches, dunes and helping wildlife?

The Kids Ecology Corps, Hollywood and the Broward Soil and Water Conservation District are inviting parents and their children to a sea oat planting from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Jan. 25.

Participants will meet at Harry Berry Park, 301 Azalea Terrace.

Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes, sunblock or hat. Drinks, gloves and the sea oats will be provided.

Hallandale Beach registering for Community Police Academy

The Hallandale Police Department is offering a free 10-week Community Police Academy to the general public.

The course includes:
- Riding with a police officer on patrol
- Police community partnerships and citizen corps services
- Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
- Self-defense techniques
- Uniformed patrol division and arrest procedures
- Gun safety and firing range experience
- SWAT unit
- K-9 unit, special operations, investigative services and internal affairs divisions
- Victim advocacy, crime analysis, crime lab investigations and more

Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones visits Hollywood YMCA

Today, the YMCA of Broward County had its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day inspirational breakfast at the First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale. The keynote speaker was Cullen Jones.

Following the breakfast, Cullen gave a swimming demonstration to a group of children at the YMCA pool in Hollywood.

Cullen is the first African-American to hold or share a world record in swimming and only the third African-American ever to make the U.S. Olympic swimming team.

Hallandale Beach police offer Are You OK program

Hallandale Beach police offers an automated telephone call service through its Are You OK program.

A secure computer in the police department will call your number at a time you choose. If you don't answer within a set amount of time, a police officer will be dispatched to your location to assist in the event of an emergency situation.

Hollywood remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hollywood will present a series of events to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 16-18. The theme for these events is “Awaken the Dream in a Changing World.”

There will be a Family Fun Day from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16 at the Washington Park Community Center, 5199 Pembroke Road. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature live music, entertainment and children’s activities.

A memorial service and tribute is set for 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, 1770 Monroe St. Several local churches will come together to present a tribute and memorial service in honor of Dr. King. This service is free and open to the public.

Free paint for Hallandale Beach homeowners

Free paint is available to Hallandale Beach single-family homeowners who are interested in painting the exterior of their house. There are no income eligibility requirements to participate in this program.

Vouchers to purchase paint and painting supplies are issued at the Human Services Department.

Homeowners must have lived in the home for at least one year, complete an intake process, present proper documentation (warranty deed or property taxes), picture identification, proof of income and a recent color photo of the house.

Those who have received a notice of code violation should bring the document with them. Staff will assist residents with information on additional programs if the property requires more rehabilitation.

Red, white and blue celebration in Pembroke Park

A red, white and blue celebration for President-elect Barack Obama will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16 at The Peninsula, 5100 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd.

The free event will feature patriotic music, videos and documentaries on past presidents and will be shown throughout the day in the senior living community's grand theater.

Hollywood Beach Balloon Festival a hit

Sunday, Jan. 4, capped off a three-day balloon festival on Hollywood Beach. The event offered tethered balloon rides to benefit local charities.

Though they were successful Saturday morning, windy conditions left a lot of disappointed folks on Sunday who were unable to ride due to safety concerns. The spectacular light show later on in the evening, however, made up for it.

Hallandale Beach hosts housing fair

Hallandale Beach has partnered with Shanco Construction Group to offer an
informational workshop about Highland Park Village, a 53-unit affordable housing project that offers new apartments and town home-style condominium units in a gated community.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Center, 410 SE Third St.

"We will take them through the whole home buying process," said Bobby Robinson, manager for the city's Community Redevelopment Agency.
