Hallandale plans games night for TV Turn-Off Week

Hallandale Beach is hosting a series of City Commission/City Manager Public Forums throughout the city. Residents are urged to meet their city officials and learn about upcoming city projects.

All meetings are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Volunteers needed for Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood

The Broward Outreach Center is looking for volunteers.

The center, at 2056 Scott St., offers programs that are designed to meet the needs of south Broward's homeless population.

Clients are taught life skills that help them to develop goals for going back into the community as productive, tax-paying citizens.

Volunteers for the center will attend a one-hour orientation class.

Food service, tutoring and administration duties are just some of the skills that are needed.

Free income tax preparation in Hollywood

Free income tax preparation is being provided at three different Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites in Hollywood:

* Boulevard Heights Community Center, 6770 Garfield St., 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, through April 2.

* Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center, 2030 Polk St., noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, through April 8.

* Hispanic Unity of Florida, 5840 Johnson St., 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, through April 4.

No appointment is necessary.

Free swim classes in Hollywood

The YMCA of Broward County – Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center has announced a water safety program for children. The first 100 people to register will receive lessons free of charge.

The classes will introduce and reinforce water safety and is geared toward children ages 5 through 12. The 30-minute sessions will be held Saturdays from Feb. 28 to May 2. Participants can select times from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

“We strongly believe that we can really impact and reduce drowning deaths through water safety programs,” said April Norris, executive director at the Greater Hollywood YMCA. "We need to get to the children before they get to the water. This is such a critical issue we are willing to provide free water safety and parent education so that money is not an issue.”

Living museum celebration in Hollywood

Nativity School's fifth grade transformed its parish hall into a living museum for a simultaneous celebration of Women's History Month and Presidents Day.

Each student appeared in costume and delivered a brief speech on their chosen historical figure.

Vow renewal ceremony in Hallandale Beach

Hallandale Beach recently hosted a vow renewal ceremony at the Cultural Community Center.

Eight couples took part in the ceremony.

Vice Mayor Bill Julian, Commissioner Dotty Ross, parks director Rebecca Munden-Correa and other well-wishers attended the event.

Free income tax preparation in Hallandale Beach

Free income tax preparation is being provided by the VITA-EITC Mobile Unit at the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW Eighth Ave. in Hallandale Beach, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 and Thursday, March 5.

Families with children who earned less than $41,646 in 2008 may be eligible for as much as $4,824 in earned income tax credit.

Workers with no qualifying children who earned less than $15,880 may receive up to $438.

If you haven't claimed it before, this refund is retroactive three years.

Free dental care In Hallandale Beach

Today, I met the dental staff from Nova Southeastern University who provide free dental care to Hallandale residents at the Austin Hepburn Center. The service is provided at no cost and there are no income eligibility requirements to obtain treatment.

The staff includes Dr. Mark Schweizer and Dr. Juan Velasco.

Senior NSU dental students Damian Acosta, Ankur Agrawal, Mihran Asinmaz, Michelle Mathieson, Piedad Velazquz and Gerardo Martinez were there during my visit.

I also met Juliette Powe, who sought out their services and reported that they did an ''awesome job."

Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood

The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will present Peter and the Wolf at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15 at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, 1770 Monroe St.

Kids will join Peter and his friends the Bird and the Duck as they work together to outwit and capture the fierce Wolf.

Other characters include grumpy Grandfather and the ridiculous Hunters.

Each character is represented by a different instrument of the orchestra and a unique way of moving.

Hallandale wants your opinion on city parks

Hallandale Beach is seeking input from residents regarding the city's parks.

The city will have a Parks Improvements Community Forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Towers of Oceanview South, 600 Parkview Drive.

The Foster Park Improvements Meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW Eighth Ave. The meeting will discuss improvements on a new playground, walking trail, pavilion, benches, garbage cans, irrigation and parking lot. Construction schedule, safety and other important information will also be discussed.
