Fire Chief Dan Sullivan and his team at the Hallandale Beach Fire Department will join others in their support for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on May 15-16 at Peter Bluesten Park, 501 SE First Ave.
The opening ceremony will be at 6 p.m., the Survivor Dinner Celebration at 7 p.m. and the Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m.
On Saturday, May 16, the closing ceremony will be at noon.
Yesterday, Nativity Catholic School had an Earth Walk around Chaminade Drive in Hollywood to raise community awareness on reducing carbon emissions and global warming through alternate forms of transportation.
The walk is part of a week-long set of activities geared toward protecting the environment.
"Earth Week has become a Nativity tradition. The entire school community helps support our annual Heifer Project, and students enjoy each of the week's activities -- along with the knowledge that they are doing something to help and protect our planet," Elena Ortiz, the school's principal.
A small-business workshop is planned for 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 30 at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Community Center, 410 SE Third St.
The free event will focus on learning about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and what it can do for you.
Speakers from the U.S. Small Business Administration, Community Bank, Wachovia Bank and SCORE will be available. You can:

The YMCA of Broward County recently hosted its annual Healthy Kids Day.
The free event assisted families who struggle to lead healthy lifestyles.
“We are thrilled with how well Healthy Kids Day turned out,” said Sheryl Woods, CEO of the YMCA of Broward County. “The crowds were entertained by great music, educated by important news and literature, inspired to embrace new concepts, and challenged to make important lifestyle changes.”
Activities included a parent/child obstacle course, swim safety education, nutrition information, Y sports for all ages, and aerobic demonstrations.
Healthy Kids Day was held at the Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center, the Parkland YMCA Family Center, the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, and at two Fort Lauderdale locations -- the L.A. Lee YMCA Family Center and the Children’s Advocacy YMCA at Rock Island Elementary.
Beautification project at the Hollywood Performing Arts Center
As part of the city’s National Arbor Day activities and its 30th year as a “Tree City USA,” a group of volunteers yesterday targeted the Hollywood Performing Arts Center for a beautification project.
Volunteers included 18 Hollywood Central Elementary School fifth-graders
and students from Johnson & Wales University.

City Commissioner Keith London is hosting a resident forum from 6 to 8 p.m. April 21 at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Community Center, 410 SE Third St.

The Hollywood Police Department has launched a new tool in its fight against crime.
Tipsters can now use their cell phones to send text message tips anonymously.
The text messages are monitored by police personnel who can respond back to the tipster in a two-way anonymous communication. Message takers will then forward the information to the appropriate investigative unit.
Hollywood Police are hopeful the new program will especially appeal to younger tipsters who may feel more comfortable utilizing the new technology to report information.

The Hollywood Art Guild and the Hollywood Beach Art and Culture Center are hosting the inaugural Hollywood Beach Family Arts & Crafts Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. April 25 at the Hollywood Beach Community Center, 1301 S. Ocean Drive.
This free event will feature activities for the young and the young at heart including arts and crafts tables, spin art, flower making, art demo stations, mural painting, hands-on sidewalk chalk art for all, popcorn, ice cones, caricatures and face painting.
Quest Center students hosted two talent shows at the school on April 3.
The shows were under the direction of music teacher Dr. David Lazerson.
Students participating in the shows had a variety of disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. Many are confined to wheelchairs and are non-verbal.
"Young Artists, Creative Minds” exhibit in Hollywood
Yesterday, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood hosted the opening reception for the "Young Artists, Creative Minds” exhibit.
Art teacher Hilary Fine arranged for Hollywood Academy of Arts and Science students in grades 2-8 to showcase their work at a professional art gallery for a month-long exhibit.
Hollywood's parks department is hosting its annual Spring Marshmallow Drop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 4 at the Boulevard Heights Community Center, 6770 Garfield St.
This free family event features 30,000 marshmallows dropped from a helicopter for children ages 6–12 to gather in their baskets and trade for prizes. The marshmallow drop is set for 10:30 a.m.
For ages 3–5, there is an egg hunt at 10 a.m. Families are encouraged to come early to enjoy a puppet show scheduled for 9:15 a.m. along with games, a bounce house, dance, baton and karate demonstrations. There will also be a visit from the Easter Bunny.
