The city's department of housing and community redevelopment hosted a CarFit event today at the Boulevard Heights Community Center.
CarFit is an educational program offered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs’ Communities for a Lifetime program.
The program is designed to help older drivers improve the fit of their vehicles for safety and comfort. CarFit uses a team of trained volunteers to conduct a 12-point checklist of vehicles and recommend car adjustments.
On Friday, Hollywood Central Elementary School students participated in a bicycle, pedestrian and traffic safety event.
The event was sponsored by the Optimist Club "Can-Am" of Hollywood and featured a number of Hollywood-based organizations providing safety information to students.
Students participated in a bicycle safety rodeo, where they wore helmets and practiced a variety of basic riding skills, including going over bridges, slaloming between cones, throwing a newspaper in a basket and obeying traffic signs.
The Optimist Club donated more than 40 new bicycles and helmets to students in need.

The Broward Outreach Center is looking for volunteers for its Christmas in July event.
Christmas in July is focused on bringing independence to the homeless. The event is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July 3 at 2056 Scott St. in Hollywood.
To volunteer, you must register and complete a volunteer application.
Hollywood unveils Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Multicultural Art Project
Hollywood is hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Multicultural Art Project Dream Dedication and Unveiling Memorial Ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 21.
The free event will be in the ArtsPark at Young Circle.
The ceremony is open to the public and will include a video presentation of Dr. King delivering the famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
Emmy award-winning Local 10 news anchor Calvin Hughes will be the guest emcee.
This musical and motivational celebration will culminate with the dedication and unveiling of artist Steven Whyte's memorial bust of Dr. King.

Sensory room for special-needs students opens in Hollywood
Hollywood Park Elementary School has unveiled a new sensory room for special-needs students.
The room, which features a sound-responsive light panel, a ball pool that vibrates and a fine motor and gross motor area, stimulates and organizes the senses and leads to overall development and academic learning.
The Sensory Room was constructed with grants from Lowe's, the Florida Marlins and the city of Hollywood.

On Wednesday, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital hosted a ribbon cutting for the expansion of their Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The hospital has completed construction for the first phase of the project, which will feature 23 private rooms, bringing the Level III NICU to 64 beds total.
WorkForce One is seeking applicants for the Summer Youth Employment Program.
Earn $9 per hour from June 15 to Aug. 7 if you meet the eligibility requirements. The program offers various job opportunities, such as clerical assistants, child-care assistants, camp counselors, park aides, or teacher assistants.

Hallandale Beach will host a hurricane forum from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28 at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE Third St.
Residents are invited to learn from the experts on how to prepare for a safe season and can address officials to discuss their concerns.
Guest speakers include officials from the National Weather Service, Florida Department of Financial Services, Broward Emergency Management Division and the city's fire-rescue and public works departments.

Hollywood's Department of Housing and Community Redevelopment will host a series of free workshops for homeowners. The workshops will serve as guidance for struggling homeowners seeking advice on available programs and services.
Participants will be able to meet face-to-face with mortgage lenders to discuss loan modification and alternatives to prevent foreclosure. They will also meet with local housing and credit counselors to learn what solution fits their circumstances to keep their house.

The city will host a Police and Fire Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at the David Park Community Center, 108 N. 33rd Court.
The free event will feature crash test dummies, Sparky the Fire Dog, an apparatus and vehicle display, a SWAT building assault, a house fire simulation, a health fair, hurricane preparedness information and more.
Hallandale Beach is hosting a CRA 101: Community Redevelopment Basics Workshop at 6:30 p.m. May 13 at the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW Eighth Ave.
The workshop will cover several topics, including:

-- How is CRA funding utilized?
-- What programs are available through the CRA?
Yesterday, I met Michael Layne and Dave Weinberg of Aqua Save Products.
Their product, Flush Choice, is being used in Hallandale Beach's Toilet Retrofit Program.
Rafael Perdomo, the city's water conservation coordinator, is reaching out to condominiums and residential areas to use the dual flush retrofit kit.
The product, offered at no cost through the city, reportedly saves more than 17,000 gallons of water for a family of four while significantly reducing the amount paid in water bills.
