Bookkeeping workshop in Hollywood

Hollywood celebrates the Fourth of July

The Hollywood Beach and Broadwalk will sparkle once again as the city celebrates the nation’s 233rd birthday on Saturday, July 4.

The Star Spangled Spectacular is sponsored by the city's parks department and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency-Beach District.

Highlights include:

* Entertainment at the Beach Theatre at Johnson Street with performances by Fusik, Robbie Hazen and the Riot, Electric Arrow, Salzon-Jazz and The Fabulons.

* Children’s fun with DJ and Games Master Tony Tiru at Charnow Park, Garfield Street and the Broadwalk, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

* Star-Spangled Spectacular Fireworks show beginning at 9 p.m.

A free shuttle will operate from 4 to 11 p.m. from the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center, 2030 Polk St., with drop-off and return at Johnson Street and A1A.

Free Wi-Fi in Hollywood

Hollywood will host a Wire Cutting Ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 1 in the ArtsPark at Young Circle.

This ceremony will celebrate the benefits of the Wireless Hollywood: Efficiency Through Innovation technology project and the creation of a free outdoor Wi-Fi system for the public to use within the city.

Interactive displays, including the new Police Mobile Command Vehicle, will be stationed on the ArtsPark plaza to demonstrate how this new wireless platform will improve the efficiency of numerous city departments, including public utilities, police, code enforcement and building.

Unleashed at the Hollywood ArtsPark

Enjoy complimentary admission to Runcie Tatnall’s “Unleashed” exhibition of dog portraits and beach scenes in the ArtsPark’s Visual Arts Pavilion Gallery.

The gallery is open to the public through Aug. 28. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. The ArtsPark is in Young Circle, at the corner of U.S. 1 and Hollywood Boulevard.

Hallandale Beach celebrates Fourth of July

Hallandale Beach will host a birthday party for America on the Fourth of July.

The celebration will take place on South City Beach, on A1A just south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard, from noon to 6 p.m.

There will be children's activities, including a bounce house, rock wall and bungee jump, and a DJ.

Parking and shuttle service are available from North City Beach, Wal-Mart, 2551 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd., and the Memorial Outpatient Center, 1750 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd.

Meeting set on Hollywood Boulevard improvements

The Florida Department of Transportation is hosting a community awareness meeting to discuss improvements to Hollywood Boulevard.

The meeting will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30 at the Boulevard Heights Community Center, 6770 Garfield St.

The public is encouraged to drop by at their convenience. There will be an informal open house format, and no formal presentations will be made.

Tillamook Cheddar at the Dogs of Summer event in Hollywood

More than 1,000 people attended the Dogs of Summer event in Hollywood this past weekend.

The event, in the ArtsPark at Young Circle, featured a variety of vendors and demonstrations.

Tillamook Cheddar, an internationally known dog artist, created one of her paintings live for a captive audience.

Hollywood wants your opinion

The city's parks department is conducting an online survey to gather information for their first Comprehensive Parks Master Plan.

The survey, on the city’s Web site at www.hollywoodfl.org/parksurvey.htm , is available in English and Spanish and takes about 15 minutes to complete.

Copies of the survey also are available at all city recreation centers. Submissions are due June 30.

Participants who complete the survey by that date can enter to win one of five giveaways, including gift certificates from several downtown Hollywood restaurants and boutiques.

Dune planting on Hollywood beach

Hollywood is looking for volunteers for a dune planting on June 25. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at the beach between Walnut and Desoto streets.

Public parking is available on Meade Street, and you can walk north three blocks to the site.

Hollywood author publishes poetry E-book

Hollywood resident Sharon Maloney has released her latest book, "Collected Thoughts On Life."

The E-book, published by Lulu Press, takes a look at those who can't conform to society and the people who do. Her poems express her dreams, inner beliefs and true emotions on the matter.

Maloney is the author of three other poetry books, including "Sharon’s Verses" and "Philosophies About God."

Hallandale offers free prescription discount card

Hallandale Beach will soon introduce a program that will provide some relief from the high cost of prescription drugs.

The city is making free prescription drug discount cards available to city residents through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities.

The discount cards offer average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

NLC prescription discount cards can be picked up beginning July 1 at the Hepburn Center, 750 NW Eighth Ave.

Special City Commission meeting in Hollywood

Hollywood will have a special City Commission meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 in the commission chambers at City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Blvd.

The meeting will be to discuss whether the city should move forward with seeking a charter from the Broward County School Board.

“While Hollywood has some excellent schools, there is a perception that the educational opportunities in Hollywood are subpar," says Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober. "A charter school could be one step toward offering more options for families and changing outdated perceptions.”

The meeting will include information from Pembroke Pines City Manager Charlie Dodge about that city’s charter school program, the largest of its kind in the state.

The public also will have an opportunity to comment on whether Hollywood should apply for a charter.

Input meetings set for Johnson Street redevelopment

Hollywood will have two public meetings to gather input from residents on the redevelopment of the city-owned Johnson Street property at A1A on Hollywood beach.

The first community meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 in Room 215 at City Hall.

Th second meeting will be for Hollywood Beach residents and property owners at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18 at the Hollywood Beach Culture and Community Center, 1301 S. Ocean Drive.

The city has also established an e-mail address, johnsonstreetrfp@hollywoodfl.org to collect comments.

A special link will also be placed on the city’s Web site to keep the public informed on the progress of the solicitation.

Dogs of Summer in Hollywood

Meet dog artist Tillamook Cheddar and enjoy pooch portraiture photos, pet-related vendors and sidewalk chalk art during the Dogs of Summer event.

The free event will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21 in the ArtsPark at Young Circle in downtown Hollywood.

There will also be a bounce house, art exhibition by Runcie Tatnall, presentations on pet nutrition, canine safety for kids, dog obedience, therapy dogs and much more.

• Meet and greet Tillamook “Tillie” Cheddar and her human companion, Bowman Hastie III
• Demonstration by the South Florida Air K9s Performing Dogs
• Storm-phobia presentation by Dr. Terry Curtis, University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine

Sunday, June 21, 1–3:30 p.m.
• Tillie does a live demonstration of her one-of-a-kind art-making technique
• Children’s Interactive Art Tent
