Electronic recycling in Hallandale Beach

You can bring electronic items to be recycled at the city's public works recycling station.

Rechargeable batteries, computers, televisions, printers, cell phones and fax machines are some of the items that are accepted.

A drop-off Dumpster is available at 630 NW Second St to collect the items.

West Park opens new Community Health Center

The West Park Community Health Center was unveiled last night during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The center, at 5801 Hallandale Beach Blvd, opened this month after receiving $1.5 million in federal stimulus funding.

The center offers comprehensive care including family medicine, pediatrics, HIV/AIDS testing and prescription assistance.

Volunteers needed for Oakridge Elementary School

Hollywood is looking for volunteers to lend a hand in sprucing up the landscape of Oakridge Elementary School by doing yard work, weeding, and mulching from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, August 8.

Diamonds in the Rough program in Hollywood

Today, I visited the Orangebrook Golf and Country Club where youngsters in the Diamonds in the Rough Youth program practice.

The organization was established in 1999 by then-Hollywood Assistant City Manager Cameron Benson with the mission to ensure that all youth, regardless of social or economic background, have an opportunity to learn and play the game of golf.

BankAtlantic awards students in Hollywood

The awards reception for the Community Summer Art Contest was held yesterday at BankAtlantic's Hollywood branch.

Students from the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood were awarded a $2,500 grant from the BankAtlantic Foundation to sponsor the contest, which is based on the BankAtlantic mascot "7."

Children in three age categories were eligible to win a total of $300 in prizes, which consisted of savings accounts of $50 for the first-place winners and $25 savings accounts for second- and third-place winners. BankAtlantic is providing funds for these new accounts, in addition to the BankAtlantic Foundation grant.

Venezuela comes to Hollywood

The city of Hollywood has partnered with the Florida Foreign Trade Association and the Broward Alliance to host an international trade mission to provide local businesses with access to emerging global markets.

The event is part of a continuing series with Venezuela's trade mission appearing on July 21. The welcome ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Hollywood City Hall, Room 219, 2600 Hollywood Blvd. One-on-one business sessions will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Charnow Park Community Center, 300 Connecticut St.

Progress in the Park in Hollywood

Progress in the Park is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, 2400 Charleston St. in Hollywood.

A parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the center, proceed south to Greene Street, east to 23rd Avenue, south to Hood Street, east to 22nd Avenue, north to Charleston Street and then back to the center.

The parade will be followed by a celebration with music, games and more. Free back-to-school supplies will be provided.
