Women's Cancer and Health Symposium in Hallandale

The Hallandale Beach Human Services Department is planning a Women's Cancer Awareness and Health Symposium. It's set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Austin Hepburn Center, 750 NW Eighth Ave.

There will be free workshops and screenings. Topics include:
-- Nutritional Health and Cancer Prevention
-- Breast Cancer Health Education: Triple Touch II
-- Cervical and Colon Cancer
-- HIV-AIDS Workshop and Free Confidential Testing
-- Relaxation Therapy and Mental Health for Wellness

Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer prevention.

Hallandale offers free telephones for the hard of hearing

Special telephones will be distributed at no cost to the hard of hearing next month in Hallandale Beach.

Ten Cent Movie Matinee in Hallandale

Hallandale Beach will present a Ten Cent Movie Matinee at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Aug. 27) at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE Third St.

"Follow that Dream" features Elvis Presley as good-ole-boy Toby Kwimper, who just wants to make a life for himself and his family in sunny Florida.

Volunteers needed for tax assistance program

Hollywood-based Hispanic Unity of Florida is looking for volunteers to participate in a volunteer income tax assistance program.

You can become a certified tax preparer through the IRS-sponsored program at no cost to you.

Participants will assist low-income workers with preparing and completing their income taxes.

Volunteers who can speak Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole are especially encouraged to join the program, and you must be 18 or older.

Assignments are flexible and based on your schedule, but there is a mandatory 40-hour training for certification.

Hollywood Beach Latin Festival coming next month

The Hollywood Beach Latin Festival celebrates its 16th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 20. The event, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., will include free medical exams, Latin music and food.

Internationally renowned performers, top local musicians, arts and crafts merchants, raffles, and dozens of food vendors will surround almost 2 miles off the main stages, located on New York and Fillmore streets.

The event draws an estimated crowd of 30,000 who attend for free while enjoying the last days of summer at the beach.

Water conservation workshop in Hallandale

Hallandale Beach is hosting a water conservation workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE Third St.

The program includes information on how to install rain barrels, how to create your own food garden, planting and landscaping techniques and basic tips for better nature photography.

Twelve rain barrels will be raffled to residents. A driver’s license and utility bill are required to participate.

2009 Neighborhood Games in Hollywood

Hollywood will host an assortment of Neighborhood Games from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Driftwood Community Center, 3000 N. 69th Ave.

Free hot dogs and popcorn will be handed out during a variety of games, including track racing, Jeopardy and tug-of-war.

Hollywood students create butterfly garden

South Broward High School students have created a butterfly garden at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood.

The garden was created through a city grant.

Recently, I visited the garden and met with two of the students who participated in the program, and their art teacher Susan Ostheim.

Groundbreaking ceremony for Hallandale school

A groundbreaking ceremony was held this morning to usher in a new replacement school for the Lanier-James Education Center at 1050 NW Seventh Court in Hallandale Beach.

The 61,000-square-foot building will accommodate about 250 students from kindergarten to 12th grade.

The project cost is estimated at $7.8 million.
