Nuremburg interpretor in Hollywood

100_0710.JPG

Today, I went to the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood.

There, I met Eli Rosenbaum, director of the office of special investigations of the criminal division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

He was there to interview Howard Triest, a survivor and liberator known for his service as an interpreter during the Nuremberg Trials.

Triest came face-to-face with former Nazi leaders who were responsible for the death of 6 million Jewish people, including Howard’s parents at Auschwitz.

Triest's interview will be added to the numerous oral accounts of survivors collected at the center.

Holocaust author comes to Hollywood

goat.jpg

Aranka Siegal, author of "Upon the Head of a Goat" and "Grace in the Wilderness," will appear at the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18.

"Upon the Head of a Goat" is a powerful account of survival by a Hungarian girl liberated from Bergen-Belsen. At the outbreak of World War II, 9-year-old Piri is visiting her grandmother in the Ukrainian countryside and is unable to return to her family in the Hungarian town of Beregszász.

In "Grace in the Wilderness," Siegal continues her autobiography of the years just after the war. The book opens on the eve of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen and recounts Piri's experiences as a patient in a Red Cross hospital, as a student in a Swedish school for refugees, and as the adopted daughter of a loving Christian family in the Swedish countryside.

The event is free, and the center is at 2031 Harrison St.
