Pembroke Gardens to add green office buildings

Shops at Pembroke Gardens, the sprawling outdoor shopping mall that hugs the intersection of Pines Boulevard and I-75, just got bigger.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to grant Duke Realty the right to install a 36.9-acre green office park between Pembroke Road and Pines Boulevard, just south of the strip mall.

"We want to make some, if not all, of the office buildings green LEED-certified," said Bill Mitchell, Duke Realty's petitioner.

To earn green status, the office park's design calls for low-scale lighting, several bicycle racks and carpool parking spaces to encourage fuel-efficient travel.

Once construction begins on the four four-story office buildings, Duke must reduce airborne pollution, recycle construction waste and use energy and water efficient plumbing.

Also in the works are bus shuttles to and from Pembroke Gardens and wide sidewalks.
