YMCA programs to grace west Pines park

The Y is taking root in Pembroke Pines.

Thanks to a recent contract brokered last month by city commissioners, the family-friendly organization YMCA is finding a home inside a 17,000-square-foot addition to the Pembroke Shore Park gymnasium.

To manage the center’s expected spurt of traffic, the city is paving a 200-space parking lot across the street on the southwest corner of Pines Boulevard and Southwest 172nd Avenue.

The city is also footing the $7 million new building addition and is purchasing the two-acre parking lot for as much as $375,000, costs both stemming from a $100 million GO bond Pines residents voted for and approved in 2005.

The YMCA of Broward County plans to begin offering programming at Pembroke Shores on Nov. 1, plus handle existing memberships for the city-maintained basketball and volleyball programs. The partnership is expected to net Pines a savings of $700,000 over five years.
