Organize food drives for Outreach Center

As part of its April Food Days Mega Food Drive, the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano Beach is asking the public to host food drives throughout April to feed the homeless in the area.

The Outreach Center, which provides shelter to the homeless, is asking residents, businesses, schools and organizations to hold food drives to feed the homeless at the center.

Donations being accepted include; canned vegetables and meat, dried pasta, instant potatoes, cereal boxes and dried milk. The donations can be dropped off at the Broward Outreach Center, 1700 Blount Road. For more information, call 954-979-6365.

County Launches 'Go Green' Web site

To help residents and businesses “go green” the Broward County government recently launched a Web site that site highlights the county’s environmental initiatives in transportation, tourism, conservation, recycling, environmental preservation, education and outreach.

The Web site also lists activities of the County’s Climate Change Task Force, and tips for residents and businesses to “go green.” For more information, visit www.broward.org/gogreen.

Broward Outreach Center in Pompano Beach in need of donations for Easter

To help give homeless and needy children in Pompano Beach a memorable Easter holiday, the Broward Outreach Center is seeking filled Easter baskets for its Thanksgiving in April event April 10.

Donations are currently being accepted at the center, 1700 Blount Road, through April 9. For more information, call 954-979-6365.

Historical Society offers walking our of Pompano Beach’s Historic Downtown

To help residents gain a better perspective of what Pompano Beach used to look like, the Pompano Beach Historical Society and the Pompano Beach Green Market is offering a free guided walking tour of Pompano Beach’s historic downtown at 9:30 a.m. March 14.

Two long-time Pompano Beach residents and local historians, Bud Garner and Don Downie, will conduct the tour. During the tour, the pair will discuss the historic structures that remain, as well as the businesses that occupied those buildings and the people who lived and worked in old Pompano.

The walking tour will begin at Pompano Beach Historical Society’s booth at the weekly Pompano Beach Green Market located at the corner of Northeast First Street and Flagler Avenue in Pompano Beach. The tour is free and handicapped accessible.

March signals start of Bicycle Month

Throughout March, bicycle enthusiasts or residents just hoping to enjoy a day on their bicycle will have more than 50 events and activities to participate in.

To promote bicycle safety for all ages, various cities in Broward County will be hosting bicycle rodeos, recreational rides, bike-to-work challenges, nature bike hikes, lunchtime rides, bicycle scavenger hunts, and tandem rides for the visually impaired.

Annual Granny’s Attic garage sale returns to Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach residents looking for bargains will have their chance at the Pompano Beach Parks and Recreation Department’s giant indoor garage sale, called Granny’s Attic.

Approximately 100 vendors featuring various household and random items will be on-hand. Pompano Beach Garden Club will also be selling plants and baked goods, as well as the Pompano Beach Preschool, which will be selling food to benefit the school.

Tickets are $12 for adults, and children under the age of 12 are admitted for free when accompanied by an adult. The sale is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 7 at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center, 1801 NE Sixth St. For more information, call 954-786-4111.
