Pompano Tigers Tackle Football and Cheerleading registration begins Friday

The Pompano Tigers, a youth tackle football league will soon open registration for the upcoming football and cheerleading season.

The Pompano Beach Parks & Recreation will begin registration May 1 at Pompano Beach Highlands Park, 1650 NE 50th Court. Children, ages 6 to 15, will be allowed to sign-up for the league.

Registration fees are $75 per resident and $150 for nonresidents from Friday to June 30th and $85 per resident and $170 for nonresidents after June 30. Practices will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 29th through Nov. 29 at the North Broward Park, 4400 NE 18th Ave. Games will be played on Saturdays at North Broward Park.

Ely High among schools to receive grant money

Blanche Ely High in Pompano Beach was among 10 Broward County School District high schools to receive $5,000 worth Nike products. The grants were part of an overall $50,000 donation from Nike to support high school football in Broward County.

The Broward County Athletic Association’s received the grants because of its commitment to football and participation in the annual Dade vs. Broward All-Star football game. Funds from the grants will be used to purchase equipment for the players on either the school’s varsity or junior varsity football teams, annually.

Pompano Beach joins Facebook

To help connect residents to the city using the Internet, Pompano Beach recently signed up for Facebook, a social networking Web site.

The city joined the free-access Web site to better connect and interact with residents. Once residents sign-up on the Web site, they can become a “fan” of the city and will immediately begin receiving updates on city news and events. Participants can also post comments and recommendations on what they would like the city to do.

The Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce is also a member of Facebook.

Charity seeks donations for U.S. soldiers

American Moms for Soldiers, a non-profit organization that provides donations to soldiers in the U.S. military, who have no family, is seeking assistance from residents.

The organization is in need of hygiene and comfort items, snack foods and over-the-counter medications, which will be shipped to the soldiers serving overseas.

Karla Smiley, who works for Pompano Pediatrics, started the nonprofit after hearing that many soldiers who have no families, do not receive care packages when mail call comes in.

Donations or checks can be mailed to American Moms for Soldiers, 3350 NW 66th St. in Fort Lauderdale. For more information, call 954-232-2432.

Local Legion Post invites public to honor soldiers

The American Legion Post 142 will be hosting an organizational meeting to discuss its annual Memorial Day celebration. The post is inviting the public to join the meeting and submit ideas to honor the fallen soldiers.

Lighthouse Point Library seeks tutors

The Teen Board of the Doreen Gauthier Library in Lighthouse Point is currently accepting applications for elementary school tutoring. The library, 2200 NE 38th St., is seeking high school honor students, who would like to volunteer to tutor the young students in reading and math.

The student and tutor will meet on an agreed schedule using the library’s tutoring rooms. The program is free. For more information, call 954-946-6398.

Civic Association has egg hunt

The Cresthaven Civic Association is organizing a Spring Egg Hunt and Picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 11, at Cresthaven Park, 1320 NE 27th Court. A raffle will be held at the event as well as a bounce house, face painting, clowns and representatives from Broward Sheriff’s Office who will be on-hand to fingerprint children.
