Pompano Beach provides foreclosure help on Web site

Residents having trouble or behind on their mortgage payments can seek helpful advice on Pompano Beach’s Web site.

Pompano Beach to implement ‘free’ chlorination

In an effort to improve the water supply, the Pompano Beach Utilities Department will begin free chlorine dosing of its entire water distribution system beginning Aug 3.

The chlorination process lasts for four weeks until Aug. 31, and is performed in compliance with all Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Broward County Health Department regulations maintenance practice that occurs semi-annually.

Residents may experience a different taste and smell of the water, but it will remain safe to drink, bathe and cook with. Also, the water may appear discolored, but it is only temporary and residents should let their faucets run until the water clears up.

Pompano Beach to rename street after longtime community activist

Dennis Myers, a well-known Pompano Beach community activist who died in September 2008, will be honored by the community of Cresthaven and Pompano Beach by having a street named after him.

The City Commission passed a resolution a few months ago to change Northeast 33rd Street between Federal Highway and Northeast Third Avenue to Dennis Myers Street for his tireless work in the community.

The street renaming dedication will take place on Saturday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church Social Hall, 3331 NE 10th Terrace. For more information, call 954-786-7536.

I personally had an opportunity to interview Myers more than a year ago and found him to be a very nice man who truly cared about his community.

Lighthouse tour scheduled for Saturday

As the Lighthouse celebrates its 8th anniversary of restoration, the Lighthouse Station will be offering residents a chance to tour the 101-year-old tower. The Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society is helping coordinate the tours.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday July 25 participants are asked to park across the street from north dock of Sands Harbor Hotel, 125 N. Riverside Drive at Pompano Beach’s parking lot. Every 50 minutes, a chartered boat will shuttle residents to and from the Lighthouse Station until 2:45 p.m. The Lighthouse will close at 4:30 p.m. and participants should allow three hours for the parking fee. Individuals will pay $25 to tour the lighthouse, while a family can pay $35 and a business or corporation can pay $50.

Broward Sheriff’s Office hosting shred-a-thon in Pompano Saturday

Residents interested in shredding away their documents to help protect identity theft will have an opportunity from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday July 25 at Pompano Beach City Hall, 100 West Atlantic Blvd.

The shred-a-thon is hosted by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Call 954-321-4100.

Pompano Beach sorority and hospital to offer free immunization shots Saturday

The Pompano Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the North Lauderdale Saraniero Library will be offering free back-to-school immunizations for Broward County students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday July 25, in the library auditorium, 6901 Kimberly Blvd. in Lauderhill, representatives from Holy Cross Hospital will be providing free immunization shots. Child friendly movies will be shown and refreshments will also be served. Also, Delta Sigma Theta will give out a limited amount of school supplies.

The child must be accompanied by a parent, which also has to bring the child’s immunization records as well as a valid identification. For more information, contact Sonya Young at 954-629-3867.

Local students to be honored at scholarship awards reception

Florida State Representative Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed, who representatives parts of Pompano and Deerfield Beach and The Florida Conference of Black State Legislators Foundation will be hosting a scholarship awards reception to honor local students.

The award show lasts from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday July 26 at the Westside Park Recreation Center, 445 SW Second St. in Deerfield Beach.

During the reception, students Shatoya J. Knight , Raymond Newton , Travis McDonald and Cedrick Braddy will be honored with scholarships. The guest speaker will be Doug Lyons, a Senior Editorial Writer with the Sun Sentinel.

Tickets are $15 and all proceeds will be used to purchase school supplies and refreshments will also be served. Call 954-786-4848.

Pompano Beach historical city directories available at Main Library

An online database featuring historical phone directories of Pompano Beach residents from 1955 through 1982 is available at Broward County’s Main Library in Fort Lauderdale, 100 S. Andrews Ave.

The new, free service permits residents to view the directories online and enables them to search for names, phone numbers and addresses from cities in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Experienced captain to speak at Pompano Beach Offshore Anglers meeting

Captain Bouncer Smith will be the guest speaker at the Pompano Beach Offshore Anglers meeting.

His presentation will detail the past 40 years of fishing in South Florida and will include a question and answer session.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday July 20 at Galuppi’s Restaurant, 1103 N. Federal Highway. Tickets are $10 for non P.B.O.A. members and each participant will receive a $10 voucher to Motor Boat Bait and Tackle. There will also be raffle tickets and t-shirts for sale. Results of feasibility study regarding police forces to be discussed July 21

The results of a feasibility study for police services in Pompano Beach will be discussed at a special City Commission meeting Tuesday July 21.

With the Broward Sherriff’s Office contract with Pompano Beach up for renewal Oct. 1, Pompano Beach hired Willdan Homeland Solutions, a consulting firm, to study whether the city could save money if it decided to start its own police force.

Representatives from the firm will be on-hand to present their findings of the study after the scheduled Community Redevelopment Agency meeting at 5:30 p.m. July 21 at the City Commission Chambers, 100 W. Atlantic Blvd.

Pompano Beach recently published the group’s findings on its Web site at www.mypompanobeach.org.

Music Under the Stars concert series is back

The annual Music Under the Stars free concerts series is returning to Pompano Beach for the 20th time.

Pompano Beach has been hosting the event meant to entertain residents for free. Musical forms being played live include golden oldies, jazz, rock ‘n roll, latin, pop and rhythm and blues.

All concerts last from 7 to 9 p.m. every Saturday until August 8. Residents are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, picnic baskets, friends and families to the concerts on the city’s beach.

Free back to school immunization shots available July 15 and July 22

Parents looking to avoid the last minute rush for immunization shots will have an opportunity to so in Pompano Beach.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., July 15 and 22 at the McNair Community Center, 2800 NW Ninth Court, the Broward County Health Department will be offering free immunization shots to children. Children must be accompanied by an adult and have the child’s immunization records on-hand.

Search for new Pompano Beach City Manager continues

With former Pompano Beach City Manager Keith Chadwell officially gone, the search for his replacement is heating up.

At 8:30 a.m. Friday at the City Commission Chambers, 100 W. Atlantic Blvd. the Pompano Beach City Commission will host a Special Commission Meeting to watch presentations from the consulting firms currently recruiting a new city manager for the city.

After the presentations, the City Commission will then rank those firms to begin contract negotiations.

President Obama nominates Pompano Beach High graduate for federal post

Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell, a native of Pompano Beach and graduate of Pompano Beach High was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the Federal District Court Bench.

Honeywell currently resides in Tampa Bay with her husband Gerald and two children, Brenton and Briana. Honeywell grew up in Pompano Beach, was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church and graduated as the Salutatorian at Pompano Beach High.

Judge Honeywell currently serves as a Circuit Court Judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida and was appointed to that position by then Gov. Jeb Bush in 2000.

Pompano Citi Centre seeking entertainers for holiday season

Although the holiday season is still months away, the Pompano Citi Centre is in process of searching for local performers to entertain people at the center.
