Ana Murillo, a detective with the Broward Sheriff’s Office is one of four women in the department to featured on Police Women of Broward County, a new reality show on TLC that details their lives on and off the streets. Murillo mainly patrols Pompano Beach.

The show airs at 9 p.m. every Thursday.

What was your initial reaction when you were approached about being on the show?
I didn’t think it was going to be that big, I thought it was just going to be a ride along. I’m used to being around my guys, but now we have three or four kids to babysit.

Has having cameras follow you around changed your job?
Not at all. We always have people on the street trying to videotape or record what we do to see if we’re going to do something wrong, so we’re use to cameras. The only difference now is we have professional people.

Has your life changed at all since the show first aired?
A little bit. I guess when I dress down I’m more undercover than when I’m in uniform. When I’m in uniform, people come up to me like, ‘Ana, is that you?’ It’s different.

What do you hope viewers take away from watching the show?
The only thing I would like for the audience, particularly the young females [to take away is that], if they’re thinking about pursuing [law enforcement] as a career, to go ahead and pursue it. This is a male dominated field, but we do need females in this line of duty. Other than that, everybody’s going to critique us, but they have no idea what it’s like to be in my shoes.

What are the keys to balancing family life and work?
I don’t mix both, I separate them completely. When I’m working I dedicate myself to work, when I’m home, I dedicate myself to being a mom.

Who’s had the biggest influence on your career?
I had a lady by the name of Beverly King, she’s now a retired port authority Sgt. I looked up to her, she had a similar situation to what I had. I was a single mother at the time trying to raise my son and she went through the same thing.

Do you have any future goals with the Sheriff's Office?
Right now, I’m concentrating on what I do. I want to get better or more fluent with narcotics. This is a very risky job and this department can bring you a lot of things.
