Sunrise school collects two tons of food, supplies

Students at Harvard Academy in Sunrise have collected 2,500 pounds of food and supplies to help victims of Hurricane Ike in Haiti and Texas.

The canned food drive began after the storm and will continue to help until the disaster conditions subside, said Seemee Chan, the school's director.

"We started the food/clothing/supply drive after the hurricane that affected Texas and Haiti because we have families in those areas that are affected," Chan said. "It kind of snowballed into two and a half tons we collected."

Chan added that although the school has previously done similar projects, they have never had this kind of overwhelming response.

Sunrise couple advocate defeat of Amendment 2

A Sunrise couple who enjoys domestic partnership rights under the Broward County ordinance, hope that voters will defeat a state constitutional amendment that would define a marriage between a man and a woman as the only legally recognized domestic union in the state.

Helene Milman and Wayne Rauen have been together for 25 years. They say if they want to get married, they will, but for the moment, they are happy with the current circumstances of their relationship.

"If we got married, I would lose $13,000 a year from my deceased husband's social security," Milman said. "That's a lot of money for a senior citizen."

They made a video for an organization called Say No to Amendment 2. It can be viewed here.
