Sunrise will offer a free property tax exemption assistance workshop from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 8 at the Sunrise Civic Center, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

Learn about homestead and other property tax exemptions including those for seniors, widows, disabled and veterans.

Sunrise celebrates Relay for Life

The city of Sunrise's Relay for Life will take place next weekend at Welleby Park, 11100 NW 44th St.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is expected to speak during opening ceremony, which will take place from 6 p.m. May 1 to 11 a.m. May 2.

Chamber seeks prize donations for event honoring teachers

To celebrate Education Appreciation Day, the Sunrise Chamber of Commerce will be honoring the Teachers of the Year from Sunrise schools during a breakfast May 6.

The chamber is currently looking for businesses interested in donating items for the 12 gift bags it is putting together to honor the teachers for their year-round commitment to providing quality education.

All kinds of items are welcome, including gift cards and personal items. The gifts can be dropped off at The Mutual Fund Store, 9010 W. Commercial Blvd. by April 29.

The public is also invited to the ceremony, which will take place 7:30 to 9 a.m. May 6, at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites, 3003 N. University Drive. Tickets cost $10 for members, $20 for others.

Learn a few parenting skills at these workshops

The parent services department of Broward County Public Schools is offering the following parenting workshops in May:

Active Parenting for Teens workshop for parents with children, ages 12 to 18.
Will meet 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 5, at the Fox Trail Elementary School's media center, 1250 Nob Hill Road. Learn non-violent discipline techniques, and how to teach responsibility and stimulate independence.

Active parenting workshop for parents of children, ages 5 to 12.
Will meet 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 7, at the Broward County Schools South Area Office, Training Room C. 1643 N. Harrison Parkway, Building H.Learn non-violent discipline techniques and improve communication with your children.

Local art teacher offers two art workshops

Local art teacher Margo Kwashima has two art classes scheduled for May:

Watercolor painting for children ages 8-13
Will meet Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m., May 14 through June 4, at the Art Studio of the Sunrise Civic Center, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd. Cost: $48 for the four week workshop, materials not included.

Mixed media painting for adults 12 and up
Will meet Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m., May 14 through June 4 at the Art Studio of the Sunrise Civic Center, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd. Cost: $80 for the four-week workshop, materials not included.

City seeks applicants for a Charter Review Board

Sunrise City Commission is seeking applicants for a Charter Review Board. The 10-member board will be in charge of reviewing the city charter, receiving public input, and recommending charter amendments to the commission.

Applicants must be Sunrise residents and registered voters of Broward County and are subject to the provisions of City Code Section 2-76, which requires a comprehensive background check of all board appointees.

Permitting, licensing office moves to West Broward

If you are thinking of applying for some kind of operational license or certification, you might be happy to hear you don't have to drive across the County anymore.

The County’s Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection Operations office has moved from downtown Fort Lauderdale to the Government Center West, located at One N. University Dr. in Plantation.

The following services have been relocated to the Plantation office:

License applications for auto repair, auto body and paint shop, chauffeur, building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, LP gas, engineering, tree trimmer, movers, elevator and kosher foods contractor.

Building permits for unincorporated Broward County, vehicle for hire permits; and zoning permits.

Building permit records search.

Certifications in auto repair, auto body and paint technician; community code compliance for unincorporated Broward County, lien research; lot clearing payments, and building records search.

Customers should park and enter through the west side of the building.

Cancer research organization seeks marathon supporters

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is asking Sunrise residents to support cancer research by participating in one of the organization’s annual fundraising marathons.

LLS is having a Team in Training information session to explain how anyone can run or walk a marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1 miles), cycle a century ride or race in an Olympic triathlon, all while helping raise funds.

The session will take place 7 p.m. April 28, at Bike America, 2050 N. University Drive.
LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.

City provides more convenient utilities payment options

The city of Sunrise has introduced two new, convenient payment options for its utilities customers.

Customers can now make credit card, debit card or check payments online or by phone through Western Union’s Speedpay system. A $3.75 convenience fee will apply to all Speedpay transactions.

In addition, Sunrise utilities customers can opt for free, monthly automatic bank drafting.

In addition, Sunrise now provides its utilities customers a means of accessing their account information online and checking account status, prior bills and consumption patterns.

In-person payments can still be done at three locations featuring walk-up windows and drop boxes: City Hall, the Village Civic Center and the New River Civic Center.

Sunrise gallery features new exhibit

The Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery is getting ready to showcase a new exhibit.

This time it will feature "Serenity," a series of works by the Weston Art Guild, a nonprofit collective dedicated to educating the public about the importance of the visual arts. The exhibit will be on display April 15 through May 30.

The opening reception will take place at 6:30 p.m. April 18.

The gallery is lat 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd. and is open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. There is no admission fee.

Model Boat Club offers instruction

The Model Boat Club is offering free instruction and assistance for model boat enthusiasts.

The club, which meets the first Sunday of May and June at Markham Park, 16001 W. State Road 84, offers guidance to those interested in model boats. The only cost is $1.50 park admission fee.

Plantation High and leukemia organization partner for fundraiser

Plantation High School, along with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, will have the "How much do you care?” fundraiser.

The event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 4 across from the school, will raise money for extensive research for leukemia and lymphoma. There will be live performances, food and drinks, as well as games for children and adults. The event costs $2.

Sunrise to celebrate Earth Day

Sunrise is getting ready for its first Earth Day celebration and has a new Web site dedicated to the occasion.

Sunrise's Earth Day is scheduled for April 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sawgrass Sanctuary, 237 N. New River Circle. The free event will include a Eco-Chic fashion show, a tree planning ceremony, music, and children's activities.

Pop artist participates in charity event

xnxfpgSFwipbritto0407B.JPG World renowned pop artist Romero Britto recently helped raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by auctioning some of his works at Empire Pizza Café in the Sawgrass Mills Mall.

About 200 people attended the social event and purchased works by the artist, including books, sculptures and paintings, some selling for several thousand dollars.

Britto, who has collaborated with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the past, donated a percentage of the sales to the organization. Based out of South Beach, Britto has become a recognized artist around the world. Recent exhibits include an iconic art show at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
