Mall has hurricane preparedness expo

Sawgrass Mills Mall is having a Hurricane Preparedness Expo from noon to 5 p.m. June 13.

Learn about hurricane hazards and how to take action before, during and after a storm.

The mall is also seeking companies interested in exhibiting products that can be used to facilitate and protect the general public in case of a hurricane.

Sunrise prepares for Memorial Day Ceremony

The city of Sunrise will have a Memorial Day Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. May 25.

The ceremony will feature a 21-gun salute, the presentation of colors, guest speakers and refreshments. The free event will take place at Welleby Park, 11100 NW 44th St. Call 954-747-4600 for more information.

Senior Center screens classic movies

Check out some of the classic movies that will be shown Mondays at the Sunrise Senior Center in May and June:

May 25: "The Violent Men."
June 8: "Many Rivers to Cross"

June 29: "Shining Through"

Screenings are free. All movies begin at 11 a.m.

Sunrise Senior Center offers cooking lessons

As part of its cooking classes series, next Thursday, the Sunrise Senior Center will offer a class on how to make Moroccan chicken with couscous.

The class will take place 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. May 21, at the Sunrise Senior Center, 10650 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

It has a $5 fee for members, $7 for others. Register by calling 954-746-3670.

Giovanni’s having a pasta recipe contest

Giovanni’s is looking for the best pasta recipe in town. Locals are asked to mail in a favorite pasta recipe, no matter what ingredients, as long as the result is a tasty pasta.

The first place winner will have his or her name and recipe featured in the restaurant’s menu for 60 days and will also win a $250 gift certificate for the restaurant.

The second place winner will receive a $100 gift certificate and third place will receive a $50 gift certificate. The contest runs from June 1 to June 30 and the recipes will be judged on July 1.

Colonial Bank raises $68,000 for child support organization

The South Florida branch of Colonial Bank recently raised more than $68,000 for Kids In Distress during the sixth annual Taking Steps 5K Run/Walk.

For the third straight year, Colonial Bank South Florida region top the list of contributors. Colonial Bank offices in the Palm Beach and Treasure Coast area alone raised more than $11,000.

In total, the event raised more than $135,000 for Kids In Distress, which the organization will use to treat abused and neglected children through a full continuum of care that includes therapeutic interventions, shelter care, abuse prevention, foster care and adoption services.

The marathon was part of the activities Kids In Distress organized during Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.

Stamp club offers estimates, common interest

That old stamp long forgotten in your closet might be worth more than you think.

Find out at the next Sunrise Stamp Club meeting. The club meets at 10 a.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month at the Village Civic Center, 6800 Sunset Strip.

Optician repairs glasses each Thursday at civic center

Licensed optician Leonard Falitz will visit the Sunrise Civic Center every Thursday between 10 a.m. and noon for free eyeglass repair. He will also repair nose pads, screws and minor frame adjustments.
