Teens learn babysitter skills, receive certification at workshop

Babysitting is probably one of the most common things teens do to earn some cash. But not every teen is prepared to deal with an emergency,

The Red Cross offers a day-long babysitter training program to help children, ages 11 to 15, develop the babysitting skills they need in areas such as basic care, safety and first aid.

The next workshop will take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11, at Sunrise Civic Center Theatre, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

The program costs $57 and does not include lunch (participants are encouraged to bring their own).

Sawgrass Mills sponsors eighth annual Hispanic Women of Distinction Luncheon.

Sawgrass Mills has partnered with Latina Style Magazine to present the Eighth Annual Hispanic Women of Distinction Luncheon Aug. 14, a fundraising event that will take place at the Signature Grand in Davie.

The outlet mall will entertain almost 1,000 attendees with a memorable fashion presentation. Professional models wearing stylish day and evening attire from Sawgrass Mills’ most celebrated retailers will grace the extended runway to the beat of today’s hottest music.

This entertaining salute to distinguished Hispanic-American women will benefit the March of Dimes of Broward County, and the Light of the World Clinic, celebrating its 20th year of providing free, quality healthcare to more than 12,000 needy families each year.

Watercolor and mixed media painting class for children coming up

Let your children explore their artistic side at this youth watercolor and mixed media painting class for children, ages 8 to 13, coming up at the Sunrise Civic Center.

The class will meet Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 16 through Aug. 13.

The class costs $60, which does not include materials.

Senior Center plans casino trip

The Sunrise Senior Center is planning a trip to the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino July 10.

Participants will leave in a bus from the Sunrise Senior Center at 9:15 a.m. and return at 3 p.m.

Sunrise Senior Center offers a class on basic stitching called Sewing Creations.

Mammovan visits Sunrise Civic Center next month

If you haven't taken advantage of the city's discounted mammogram service, mark your calendar because the Mammovan will be at the Sunrise Civic Center July 14.

Women 35 and older can get a mammograph for $58. Insurance payments will be accepted, but no HMOs.

Celebrate July 4 Sunrise style

Join your neighbors in this July 4 celebration outside the BankAtlantic Center.

There will be live music, children's activities, retail, food and beverage vendors, and a fireworks finale presented by Sawgrass Mills.

The celebration will take place 6 to 10 p.m. July 4 outside the BankAtlantic Center, One Panther Parkway.

The event is free and open to everyone. Lawn chairs and umbrellas are permitted, but coolers are not.

Learn about the future of the media at this lecture

The next Thursdays at 2 lecture at Covenant Village of Florida will focus on the future of the media.

Perusing your favorite newspaper at the kitchen table each morning may soon become a remnant of a bygone era thanks to the ever-growing number of online newspapers and blogs.

Tom Adams, senior sales manager for the Forum Publishing Group, will explore the future of the news business in this era of burgeoning new media.

Sunrise Senior Center has these two trips scheduled for June:
Diners Club Lunch at Jaxon's
10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16. The trip costs $5 for members, $7 for others.

Broadway Palm Dinner
8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 25. Spend the day in Fort Myers and see "Peter Pan." The trip costs $44 for members, $46 for others.

Learn everything about computers at the Senior Center

The Sunrise Senior Center is offering free computer classes for seniors every Tuesday.

There are different levels offered, from beginners to advanced. Class time varies. You can also use the computer lab for free every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
