Renovated Welleby Park features electronic play system

As part of its recently completed playground improvements, Welleby Park received a cutting-edge electronic play system known as NEOS.

According to Deputy Mayor Donald Rosen, who suggested the new equipment, NEOS combines the best elements for video games and outdoor play, and provides a real workout for the whole family while helping children develop important skills like teamwork.

NEOS is designed for a range of ages and abilities. Lighted buttons provide visual cues for hearing-impaired players, and speakers located at each button provide auditory cues for visually impaired players.

The renovated playgrounds also received a poured rubberized play surface, as well as a new shade canopy.

City offers free swimming lessons for children

To protect the city’s youngest residents, Sunrise is offering free swimming lessons for children, ages 3 and up.

According to a letter issued by Mayor Roger Wishner this month, the measure was triggered by the number of children drowning every year. Reports show 765 US children, ages 14 and under, were drowning victims in 2006, he writes, adding that of that number, 91, or nearly 12 percent, occurred in Florida.

The mayor also asks homeowners to secure their swimming pools and to make sure it’s surrounded by a safety fence at least four-feet high and a self-closing, self-latching gate. He also asks residents living adjacent to a lake to consider fencing their home from the water.

The eight-session, 30-minute free swimming classes are for Sunrise residents only. Registration is only accepted in person at the Sunrise Civic Center. Call 954-747-4636 for more information.

Expect water changes this month

Residents noticing a difference in the taste, odor and color of the city’s water should not be alarmed.

From July 1 through July 22, the city’s Utilities Department will use “free” chlorine in its drinking water treatment system to provide additional protection against bacteria.

This temporary treatment of the water system is a common practice for water suppliers that use a chlorine –or chloramine– water treatment method and it’s mandated by the Broward County Health Department.

While it does not cause any adverse health effects, some might notice a slight change in the taste, odor or color of the water during this time.

For more information regarding the city of Sunrise’s treatment system, call 954-888-6000.

City’s Fire Rescue implements new EKG Remote Transmission System

Sunrise Fire Rescue has implemented the new LIFENET EKG Remote Transmission System, in collaboration with Westside Regional Medical Center, becoming the first Broward city and hospital to have such a system.

The system remotely transmits EKG reads using broadband technology to the hospital’s emergency department in less than 30 seconds. This reduces response time for heart attack patients, who suffer more heart-muscle damage with each passing minute. Once transmitted to the hospital, the EKG can be sent electronically to a physician, which expedites patient care.

The general standard for hospital emergency rooms is to provide treatment for heart attacks within 90 minutes of patient arrival at the hospital, also known as “door-to-balloon times.”

Westside Regional’s current average times are consistently under 66 minutes.
