City takes another look at health care

At the city’s special meeting, commissioners voted to switch Sunrise’s city employees to an unblended health care plan. This means they'll have the same benefits, different amount of money being taken out of a paycheck.

However, at the special meeting on Nov. 16, the commission unanimously decided to postpone this change until negotiations with fire and police unions were complete, so that the change be citywide. City Manager Bill Moeller said that the special committee would be back with a proposal for the commission in March or April.

Even though the decision being reported on in tomorrow’s paper has changed, it is still relevant since the commission will be coming back to the same issue in just a few months. Until then, readers can educate themselves on where their money is going.

Also, the health insurance of commissioners and managers are currently covered 100 percent by the city. This too could also change in the future.

Food drives start in Sunrise

You know it's the holiday season when people start rallying together to collect food for the needy. So far I've been told of two locations. Pass on the word!

Two Plantation locations are rallying to collect food for the needy.

One of them, the Harvest Drive, hopes to collect enough food to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner to 1,000 families in need throughout Broward County. Drop off goods at Plantation High School from noon to 8 p.m. Nov. 17.

They are requesting juice, canned vegetables, canned gravy, canned cranberries, canned fruit, canned soup, pasta and rice, just to name a few things.

To donate to the Harvest Drive, contact Patti Bradley at pattizb@bellsouth.net or 954-562-6916. Also visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com

Another event is the Fall Food Festival Food Drive. This drive will continue through Dec. 15. You can drop food off at West Government Center at 1 North University Drive; West Regional Courthouse at 100 N. Pine Island Road or any Broward County library.

For more information, call Alinda Montfort 954-357-6946 or e-mail amontfort@broward.org.
