The seventh annual Fire Service Survivors Conference begins at 8:30 a.m. today at the Sheraton on Fort Lauderdale Beach.

The conference, hosted by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, is a networking and learning experience for survivors of firefighters who have lost their lives. Sunrise Fire Rescue is the lead agency of the event and Motorola in Plantation is hosting the bulk of the conference, from Feb. 12 to 17.

The conferences are held in different locations every year to make it more accessible for survivors, who can participate in workshops for photography, children's grief, cooking, technology, overcoming substance abuse and more. There are also more casual events, such as a dance party.

Sofia Avellaneda, 7, left, and Mallory Schleicher, 8, of the Plantation Swim Team's
Sunrise satellite team swim laps in the new 50-meter pool.

Thanks to the weather, city staffers and young swimmers could celebrate the opening of Sunrise's new 50-meter pool and stay dry (for a while any way).

The pool, at 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd., was ushered into the community with a ribbon cutting and performance by a local synchronized swimming team. Then, local members of area swim teams jumped in for practice.

The pool has been out of use to the community since October 2009, when a contractor paid to resurface and created irreparable damaged. Construction began on the new pool nine months ago. The city is still in court settling the issue.

Check out the Feb. 22 issue for more pictures from the celebrations.

In a six-to-two vote, the Broward County Commission approved a $7.7 million loan to revamp the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise with plans to share in the building’s future profits, including the Florida Panthers arena.

In the agreement, the county will receive 20 percent of profits in years the center’s profits reach $12 million, with an interest rate of 4 percent or more. The loan will be used to build a center ice seating area, with an executive club and suite-level seating. This work is expected to bring 200 new jobs to the county.

The first $250,000 brought to the county is slated to go into the Capital Expenditure Reserve Account. The arena will contribute $250,000, or double that should the profit margin not be met.

The Total Harmony Xperience barbershop chorus will be traveling to Portland, Oregon in July to compete in the 2012 Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention.

The chorus is a collaboration of Sunrise’s Sunshine Chordsmen and other singing groups in the southeast region, formed in May 2011. The singers will be under the direction of Alex Rubin. The Barbershop Harmony Society’s 17 district choruses competed to qualify for the convention last fall. The Total Harmony XPerience placed 22 of 204 nationwide.

Sunshine Chordsmen have been singing barbershop harmonies together since 1985 and were recognized at a Sunrise City Commission meeting in September 2011. In 2008, the group earned the title of district champions.

They practice Monday evenings at the Sunrise Senior Center, 10650 West Oakland Park Blvd. Visit BarbershopChorus.com.
