Wildlife center still struggling but outlook improves

Wellington - A week ago officials at Folke Peterson Wildlife Center were uncertain if they'd have enough money to continue operating past March. But after several news stories aired their struggles, residents have come to the rescue for now.
"The lights are on, we made payroll, and the animals are being fed," said Heather Landstrom, executive director of Folke. "The response from the community has been
very humbling, very gratifying, and very satisfying. We've gotten hundreds of small checks and notes with good wishes."
Landstrom credits the extra media attention with the community response, and said it has even sped up some of the center's grants that were in the works. She hopes the additional funds will be enough to get them through until a few of their larger grants come through.
"We bought ourselves a little bit of time," she said. "We will be very frugal and continue to try to raise money to pull us through the next couple of months. We're not out of the woods, but we have bought ourselves some time."

Time is running out for Pure Thoughts' chance to win $1 million contest

LOXAHATCHEE - With two days left in Zootoo.com's $1 million shelter makeover contest Pure Thoughts Horse and Foal Rescue of Loxhatchee continues to fall further behind.
In order to be considered for $1 million prize an animal rescue group or shelter must have accumulated enough points to be ranked in the top 20 by March 13. Pure Thoughts had been ranked as high as No. 13 but over the months had continued to slip further down the rankings. With two days left they have fallen to No. 23. Last week they had briefly reentered the top 20 but by Monday of this week fallen out of it once again.
The top 20 shelters that have earned the most points will receive a visit by Zootoo. Zootoo will then pick the top 10, America will vote, and the winner will receive a makeover worth up to $1 million. However, all of the top 20 shelters will receive at least $10,000.
Charities accumulate points by having friends of the charity sign up to Zootoo, which is free, and use the features on the site such as uploading photos. Just by registering with Zootoo an individual's charity of choice will receive points.

LOXAHATCHEE - Zootoo.com, a MySpace for pets, is offering up to a $1 million makeover to one lucky charity and for months it was looking like Pure Thoughts Horse and Foal Rescue of Loxhatchee would be considered.
However, with five days left in the contest Pure Thoughts is struggling to regain their top 20 ranking, which is needed to move on to the next portion of the competition.
Each charity is ranked based on the amount of points they accumulate. The top 20 shelters that have earned the most points by March 13 will receive a visit by Zootoo. Zootoo will then pick the top 10, America will vote, and the winner will receive a makeover worth up to $1 million. However, all of the top 20 shelters will receive at least $10,000.

At one point Pure Thoughts had been ranked No. 13. Recently though they fell to 22. This past weekend there was signs of hope for the charity when they moved back in to the top 20. Today though they are ranked 21 and is 20,000 points behind the next charity, New Fairfield Sherman Animal Welfare Society of New Fairfield, Conn.
