Hundreds attend memorial for polo horses

memorial.jpg WELLINGTON - Hundreds of residents gathered near the main polo field at the International Polo Club Palm Beach Palm Beach Thursday evening to mourn the loss of the 21 polo horses of Lechuza Caracas that died earlier this week. The brief memorial ceremony was led by Palm Beach Pipes and Drums while mourners tossed red or white carnations in to the lake next to the area where many of the horses died.

"This is just something you hope you never see in your lifetime," said Wellington Resident Sunny Hale. Hale briefly played for Lechuza Caracas about 10 years ago and knew the team well. "It was a great ceremony the polo club held.It gives the people the ability to pay their respects. Our hearts and condolences go out to the whole Lechuza Caracas organization."

There is still no official cause of death, but on Thursday, a pharmacy in Ocala told the press that after the horses had died they immediately launched an internal investigation and discovered that the prescription that had been ordered had been incorrectly mixed. While the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville now believe they've identified the chemical responsible for the death of the horses, but they weren't ready to reveal their findings on Thursday.
