Dinner Theater fundraiser starts Saturday

ROYAL PALM BEACH - The Royal Playhouse in conjunction with Wild Orchids Cafe will be presenting a Dinner Theater fundraising drive beginning Aug. 22.

Chef Chris Paul Falci, owner of Wild Orchids will be preparing a five-course dinner and the Royal Playhouse will be putting on "tick, tick... BOOM!" by Jonathan Larson, best known for his musical "RENT." It tells the story of an aspiring composer about to turn 30 in New York City named Jon. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, and his best friend is making a lot of money on Madison Avenue. Meanwhile Jon is waiting on tables, and trying to write the next great musical.

Tickets are $150, $50 of which will be donated to charity. There will be five performances starting Aug. 22 and ending Sept. 12.

"I'm so happy to be able to help so many people all at once through these charitable organizations," Falci said. "My passion is making people happy through food and this is the best of both worlds."

The charities that will receive a portion of the proceeds are PACE Center for Girls, Hospice of PBC, the Autism Project of PBC, FAU's CARD program, Caridad Center, the Cancer Alliance for Help and Hope, Chris Evert Charities and JDRF.

"I hope that everyone will come out, have a wonderful meal, see a great musical and have an enjoyable evening and support a local charity, said Jean Fischer, executive director of the Cancer Alliance. "We hope people dig deep in their pockets to help assist cancer patients."

The Alliance assists patients dealing with financial issues while they are undergoing treatment. Since 2003 they've helped more than 500 patients and paid out more than $1 million. Fischer said donations are down but with some reworking of their budget they've yet to turn anyone away.

"We just really appreciate them for including us in this event," she said.

This is a special production from the Royal Playhouse so they won't be handling ticket sales. Tickets must be purchased through www.wildorchidscafe.org.

The Royal Playhouse is still searching for someone to donate a home to them.

"We're waiting for this show to be over and then we'll have time to sit down and assess our future," said Peter Pagliaro, executive director. Since losing their home they had hoped to come back to the Western Communities. So far they've had no luck.

Call Aimee Zickerman of Wild Orchids Cafe at 561-504-1814 for more information.

Palms West Chamber relocates trees

pic15724.jpg

ROYAL PALM BEACH - The Palms West Chamber is taking steps to preserve the four oak trees that have to be removed from their property in order to construct their new building.

The four oaks as well as 16 cabbage palms are being relocated to be used later in the landscape plan for the property.

“The oaks were probably 40 to 50 feet tall, I would think, and probably 30-plus years old,” said Scott Armand of Armand Professional Services, who is overseeing the landscaping for the project. “They were relocated to our little tree farm on the property until we get the building done.”

The completed project will include 40 additional trees on the property.

An actual building for the chamber has been in the works for some time. Currently they are located inside of a mobile unit. The new building will be 3,927 square-feet and will feature two public conference rooms. Their current building will be donated to charity if they can find someone to move it.

Wellington sends out call to artists

The Village of Wellington has sent out a call to artists to participate in its fifth year of its Susan P. Bradford Art in Public Places Program. The deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 9.

"I think it's a beautiful program," said Corinne Ingerman of Wellington. "It's a nice way to beautify Wellington."

The art pieces will be displayed in various locations around the village from January to August. They usually accept between 25 and 35 pieces of work. All artists residing in the U.S. are eligible, but local artists are encouraged to participate.

Artists will have to loan or donate their artwork for a one-year display in Village facilities and public places. All artwork should be freestanding or in display form, framed or mounted. All forms of media will be considered.

"This is to provide an atheistic program that exposes local artists to residents in the community," said Nicole Evangelista, community projects manager.

Earlier this year the Village renamed its public art program after Susan G. Bradford. Bradford, a well-known Wellington artist, died last year. She was actively involved in the Wellington Art in Public Places Program from its inception in 2004. She was also known in the Wellington area and across the nation for her murals.

"[Susan] was involved in the art in public places since the beginning," Evanglista said. "She was very influential in the art community in Wellington."

Ingerman said she knew Susan from her involvement in the art community.

"I was very saddened by the loss," she said. "She was a very nice lady and to have her go as well her son, it was just awful."

Guidelines of the program include:
1. Participant must complete a Public Art On-Loan/Donation Application.
2. Artwork shall reflect a broad variety of styles and support community interests such as our emphasis on children, families, seniors and equestrian interests.
3. Artwork shall have aesthetic and technical merit and shall be appropriate for the site or sites in the Village of Wellington.

Call Evangelista at 561-791-4733, or e-mail her at nevangelista@ci.wellington.fl.us.
